Coiltek 15" WOT vs. Detech SEF Butterfly 12" x 15" Coils

The coverage is about the same, but my 12" x 15" SEF is superior to the WOT that I previously owned in stablity, depth and weight. I may be in the minority with my opinion, but I sold my WOT after using the SEF on my (NJ) beaches. Some folks have had issues with the quality of their SEF's, but not me (fingers crossed).

thanks for the reply ML, yea, I have been milling it over between the WOT, the SEF, and the S-12....I finally ordered a WOT.... I hope that it works out or I will be forced to do what you had to do. There are supporters of all three on all of the forums. Well I started off with the most expensive one and I think the SEF is the least expensive one of the three choices...I am also in NJ.

i bought a wot for my elite and i'm more than happy with it yes it is a little heavy but you have the option to hipmount your control box which makes the shaft and wot coil easily managable and as for proformance well i dont take mine off. in two nights beach hunting i found 10 rings 5 gold 1 silver 4 crap so the coil has paid for itself mike

I owned a 15x12 and it's light provided you remove the coil cover and use spray on bed liner. It's coverage for beach hunting was awesome. It got better depth than the 10" Tornado on the beach but for some reason it got less depth on land in my high mineral soils. One thing I found was that maxing out sensitivity with it didn't always give best depth. Often about 2PM on the dial provided best depth. It's stability was awesome and it did a good job at separation for it's size. Pin pointing was easy by using the tip or tail of the coil and often I would PP in discriminate because it was so good at it. I would have kept that coil had I been primarily a beach hunter but I wanted max depth on land. My 12x10 seems to fit the bill as it is deeper than stock in my comparisons and is deeper than the 15x12 on land. In the sand I think for coin sized targets it's at least as deep if not deeper than the 15x12. The 15x12 is a good bit lighter than the WOT and, although many like the WOT, from what I read the SEF is more stabile and does a better job at left/right seperation.

Up here in Canada I use my wot with my excalibar #1 ,and also I have a wot on my Sovereign. I can find diamond stud earings ,with no problem ,in the water .On land I can find war of 1812 buck shot very easily .Who would want any better sensitivity in a coil ? The wot has found me 48 gold items ,and 66 silver items last year alone . ---- happy hunting.

I know Erikk water hunts with a WOT 15 and has a few machines with the WOT coil on it and loves it .... I've never had one on any of my machines ........I have owned the 10 x 12 SEF which was a nice coil .....Very stable and light weight .....I now use a Sunray S-12 that hits very hard and is deeper than the SEF , but to run deeper it's not quite as stable ......It's a BIG 12 inch coil too , so it covers a lot of ground fast ...... Jim

You're the first person I've ever read that says the S12 gets deeper than the 12x10. Those few people I've talked to who have owned both say the 12x10 is deeper.

I used to own two S-12's and got rid of both of them because my 10 x 12" SEF was superior in depth and stability. The S-12 felt lighter to swing, however.

The 12x10 without a coil cover is lighter than the S12. Check the weighed weights in the Coil Weight & Price Chart thread. One person I talked to who owned the S-12 said the 12x10 hits on finer targets better. She mentioned finding a gold chain that she didn't think the S-12 would have got, and also did some testing on some stuff if I remember right.

Also, the 12x10 for me gives crisper, cleaner tones then the stock 10" Tornado and also seperates better.

One of the guys in our club ordered one in as he heard how good they were suppose to be, but found out it didn't air test that good and the quarters and half's had a low tone and didn't have the good tone like it should, so it was sent back and was given a different one only to find out the half dollars and silver dollars would null out like iron with this one, He tried a S-12 then just to see how it would react and it worked great and gave the correct tones and air tested better. I thought maybe it was something with his Sovereign as his 8 inch worked fine and the S-12 did too so that leave me with the impression it has to be something with the SEF coil.
On my E-Trac I tried the 15X12 and thought it was a very good coil, the 6X8 also seems to be good too and got a 12X10 I let a couple of people try and both said they preferred the pro coil over the 10X12 SEF coil, but I never got a chance to try it myself because winter showed up and will try in the spring when I can get out.
As far as good coils I have tried on the Sovereigns the older 8 inch coinsearch were the best to learn on while the Sun Ray S8 I felt could separate better and seen some very impressive depth. The 10 Inch Tornado coil is the best Minelab coil I have seen and used of all the stock Minelab coils and for me the S-12 of Sun Rays has been the deepest coil I have used. I did the Field test for old park hunting with the S-12 and was really impressed how well it did for me in some very worked out areas.
It comes down to what ever coil you have the confidence to use and the best luck with.

Critter,
You must have gotten an extra special 10 x 12 SEF , because I bought one on your reccomendation as you mentioned the same thing back then .....Crisp, Clear , and Razor sharp seperation ......THe razor sharp description is what I was looking for ......The 10 x 12 SEF was a nice coil , but I did not find it that better than the Tornado coil , and not any better in some respects ..... As I said earlier , I would not pay the additional money if my machine already had a Tornado coil on it ..... I would pay the extra for an S-12 however ...... Besides the 10 inch Tornado coil , I think that the Pro Coil is one of the best if not the best coil that Minelab put on a machine .... The one feature that I reallly liked about the 10 X12 SEF was that it ran very stable, and light weight ..... I will give it that ..... As Rick said , it's all about what coil and what detector you have the confidence in ......That means a lot ......Jim

The Tornado is a good coil. Much better than the various 10" versions on the Explorer. Still, I like the extra coverage of the 12x10 for land and beach hunting and as said it's deeper for me. It also gives much crisper tones and sharper seperation. The 10" Tornado now just stays on my water rig for water hunting, but I plan to try the 12x10 in the water next summer. Still, it's more convenient to just keep the 10" Tornado on my water rig. That way I only have to swap the control box over to my water rig and go water hunting.

One thing I mentioned in the past is that the 12x10 almost feels like the Sovereign's processor has been sped up. It gives sharper and easier seperation and faster reaction between targets. I attribute this to the 12x10 (and the 15x12) to having a more tightly or more well defined magnetic field.

I've tested the 10" Tornado against the 12x10 on buried targets and the 12x10 has thus far shown me that it's deeper. One test I did was to set the sentivity at 3PM on a 7 or 7.5" buried silver dime. The 12x10 would at least sound off to the target while the Tornado was silent.

I found the 15x12 got less depth than the Tornado on land for me in my high mineral soils. Just seeing too much ground matrix I guess, but for some reason in my high mineral beach sands the 15x12 did get deeper than the Tornado. That still confuses me. The 12x10 for me is deeper than both of them on land but I haven't hunted in the sand with it enough yet to say if it's deeper than the 15x12 in sand.

Here's a few pictures of the 15x12 and 10" Tornado and the WOT and the 15x12 laying over each other. As you can see, the 15x12 has slightly more length than the WOT for slightly better coverage per sweep.
