Coils

what are the two best coils you use? I am looking for parks and schools med trash to high trash and relic hunitng with a lot of iron...

In my hunting I use the D2 most of the time. For me the 6x9 is small. I've got a 5.3 but have never used it. Need one? I tried the 10x12 SEF but for me I like my D2.

I'll throw in on this one. My favorite is the stock D2 as it really is a true multipurpose coil. Next in line is the 6x10 as it is best for EMI and covers ground almost as quick as the D2. Third is a tie between the shooter and 12"....the 12" hauls for jewelry in covering large amounts of ground and the shooter is tops in the nastiest of trash and butts in close to chain link. (That's more than two but there you have it anyways.) Neil loves his 10x12 and for me, he has proved it's worthiness but hey....a BIG fact is you do best with what you are the most comfortable with.

The coil size and type are dictated by your environmental conditions. Your soil mineralization is a critical factor in choosing a coil.

If your hunt area is highly mineralized, then one of the 2d type coils is your best choice. Parks and other high trash areas would require a smaller coil, such as the 4x6 shooter.

If you are in C W relic country, then a larger size(more depth) might be called for. If your mineral levels are low to moderate, then a concentric(conical) coil is a better choice.

Rob's hunt areas are mineralized, mine are not too high. He uses the 10" 2D coil most of the time and I use the concentric mostly. The exceptions are if we go to different states

with a radical mineral change. I would recommend having several coils, for different hunt conditions.

The bottom line is however, Smaller is better in high trash conditions. Larger coils will get more depth, but will also see more trash/sweep.

Hope this helps

I have the D2, 5.3, and 4X6. The D2 is great for a stock coil and gets great coverage, but it will drive you nuts in heavy trash. And that is not the fault of the coil only the coverage footprint. Many here swear by the 5.3 as well as the dealer I bought my V3i from, and I can understand their excitement, but I find the 4x6 does a better job for me here in Southern Cal. The soil here can be a bit of a pain and I have found that the 4x6 instead of the 5.3 works for my needs when the trash starts to become too much for the D2. Other than that, I would use the D2 all the time because you swing much more often with the smaller coils as they do not cover much ground. It is also easy to miss spots with the smaller coils unless you cover the ground very carefully. The D2 can get hits on the cars in the ajoining parking lot where you are hunting even if you are being sloppy when covering the ground where you are working. Ok, that's a little bit of an exageration, but you get my point - the D2 does a good job for an out of the box coil that comes with the detector. That says quite a bit about Whites quality - because many of the other detector brands do not really start performing until you stick a better coil on "the end of the stick."

Large areas with low amount of signals I use the D2 so I can cover ground quickly.

if the targets start getting closer i switch over the the new 6X10 I just got

If it starts getting real trashy I will use the 4X6 to start separating the targets better

I love having 3 coils with shafts as it makes it very fast to switch coils

Yes..I agree, the 5.3 just didnt do it for me either. Now, that Shooter coil is something else, great coil! I use my stock 10" most of the time and the shooter when Im in moderate to heavy trash. I also I have the 950 concentric, Im gonna try to use it instead of my DD for awhile and see how it does in my low min soil.
