Coils

Aside from the stock 950, I 've bought the 4x6 DD shooter which is great in really trashy areas. Am thinking about buying the SEF 6x6 DD instead of the Whites 5.3 Eclipse. I'm pretty much a coinshooter that has to deal with a lot of trash in places where I hunt. Anyone have experience with the SEF I mentioned or has an opinion of that companies products?

FWIW, I can't expound on the SEF, but I do use the 5.3 Eclipse and will say that it is an excellent coil in trashy areas.:usaf:

I have the 5.3 and have to agree it works well in trashy areas. That said, theoretically at least, the 6X6 DD should give a bit more coverage and very good separation due to the difference in the detecting pattern. IMHO

I assume you mint to say the SEF 8X6 Butterfly coil instead of 6x6 and if you did it is a great coil i have a variety of coils and I like the sef 8x6 the best for a all around coil it seems to get great depth and is a light weight coil . It works real well in the trashy area's only time I remove mine is when I am in a bigger open area then I go to the D2 10 inch coil.
I think it would be a good addition to what you have now . Alot of people like the Eclipse 6x10 and I do have that one but don't like it as much as I do the sef and D2 coils.

Thanks and you're right...its the 8x6. Looks like what I'm looking for. I'm just not satisfied with the stock 950 coil. Does your SEF give you any more depth than the 950 or is it about the same? Identify coins better when rusty iron is present? Or is that just wishful thinking on my part.

I can't say its deeper than the 950 but it runs quieter and I would say the depth is at the least the same as the 950 . I have dug dimes and wheats as deep as 9 inches but as a rule my coins aren't that deep . I hit a old house last fall where most all my targets were coming in at 7 inches or more with no problem . As for the separation of the iron I really haven't noticed anything special there , it does identify coins right on ... I am a older man and the weight was a problem for me and going to the sef lowered that and I have no problem with it . I did notice the pinpoint was a little off on it so if you get one run some test on coins you can see and learn where your pinpoint spot is for sure By off I mean mine reads to the left just about a inch or so from center . I have the whites eclipse 6x10 and I wasn't getting the depth I wanted out of it so I got this sef and love it .

I am pretty satisfied with all my searchcoils and when used correctly for the conditions they are all really good, that said I use my 5.3 and my 6x9dd most, I use the older 8x14dd at the beach along with the stock 9.5, and the little 4x6dd does a great job sniping bedrock gold here in NC. I love em all.

You cant go wrong with the 5.3 Eclipse. Its one of my favorite coils. For me, it IDs coins right on. Its light weight compared to most other coils, has good depth while being small enough for working around trashy areas. Easy to pinpoint with too. I've found many many coins with that coil. If you do decide to go with it, you won't be disappointed. I think it would be a great addition to what you have now. You have a good sized all-around coil (950), you have a very small coil (4x6), and I would consider the 5.3 a medium sized coil. JMHO. Good luch. CCH

I agree with Bearharold, I have the 950, 5.3 & 6x8 SEF and like them all. The 6X8 seems to be more sensitive to me & the 5.3 ID's better. The depth is good on all of them, I have found deep coins (6"-8") with all of them depending on ground conditions. I use the 5.3 & 6x8 most of the time, my hardest decision is picking one because I like them both so much.

and still is, my favorite coil for the M6 and MXT's for all-purpose hunting. It serves prime duty about 95% of the time, provides very adequate depth (which I feel too many people go overboard about), and it plucks good targets among dense trash with ease.

I'm a bit biased as I like this same size coil on the Classic series and XL Pro and especially the XLT, so it was easy to adapt to it on the MXT 'group.'
