coils

In regard to the sovereign gt what do you think of the sef coils compared to the sunray coils For wet and dry beach hunting in the 10 to 12 inch range Is the Sunray worth the extra money

I just put a S-12 on my GT and i cant believe the difference between the S-12 and the stock 10". The S-12 is deeper and more stable, i cant speak for the SEF coils as i have not used them........

See the other thread about the SEFs. The 12x10 and 15x12 are both great. Ask Kered about his beach hunting experience using these coils compared to the WOT and others he has used. I think he prefers the 15x12 out of all of them.

vrf800:I prefer Sun Ray coils I had a SEF 10X12 and it did'nt pinpoint well. Some of my friends use them regular and like them but dig some large holes. I have said before if my friends start finding more targets I'll try another SEF.:minelab:

I have no problem with pinpointing the S-12. Sometimes when a target is really deep i maybe off alittle but not much. I see other people on the beach dig hugh holes but most of the time they are in to much of a rush to slow down and learn to pinpoint correctly. Other times i have seen people dig for a target at to much of a angle so to dig maybe 6-8 in down they take 10 scoops when it should take 2 or 3. More time digging is less time detecting........
Some learn some dont.......OH Well.................HH

My X-12 is dead on pinpointing. The Pro-Coil that came with my Safari pinpoints perfect, the same with my other Sun-Ray's. The SEF I had and I bought it brand new would paint the entire pin-point screen anywhere under the perimeter of that coil. I have put coins on top of the ground and could see them. Any part of the coil would pinpoint just like it was dead center. In 40+ yrs. I've never had a problem like that. My Excaliber pinpoints first time everytime as does all machines and coils I have used over the years. A friend of mine who relic hunts got that coil from me and loves it but he digs big holes anyway. Everyone else are doing well with the SEF's. I think I just got one that got by Bulgaria's quality assurance inspectors. HH :minelab:

If you walk the SEF backwards to you until the target goes away it will be just at the base of the "V" on the top of the coil. My 15x12 is more accurate at pinpointing than any coil I've ever used I think. I'd say I can stick a screwdriver into the ground at that spot and hit the target 95% of the time with the first try. I often check it with my ProPointer and the SEF is dead on. Target area is nailed down to about less than an inch. Can't even say the Whites 9.5" is as good, and I always though my QXT Pro with VCO pinpointing is as good. I also used to de-tune my Whites about 3 times to narrow down the target and yet the 15x12 is still tighter.

I dig big holes too mainly due to cave in digging real deep items, i find the SEF far better than the wot 15" to the point i now have a 18x15 to try out too, only had a couple of short trails so far due to weather but i like it  even this dustbin lid pinpoints ok

I have tested several S-12 coils and the 10 inch coil with at least 4 different sovereign versions. First off there is NO noticeable depth increase regardless of how many people claim it.. Second if you are going anywhere near the water, moving the coil through water forget it. You will get tired in half the time with the water resistance. Third No matter how much experience you have the coil is harder to pinpoint with. You will be digging extra scoops. Especially if the target is iron. My opinion the only good use for this coil is coverage in an area that may not have many targets. It will cut down on your detecting time with the added weight you one has to weight these factors carefully. The stock Minelab tornado coil is tough to beat.

What do you guys think about the old 8" (7.25") BBS coil on the Excalibur 800? I'm trying to talk my friend into stepping up to a larger coil for more coverage but am not sure how good of a trade of that will be for water hunting on that machine. I would figure at least the 10" Tornado would offer more depth and still not be causing much water drag for him. I bet it even weighs less because that 8" coil is a lead weight.

I use the 10 inch coil in very large waves down in Mexico on the Pacific side. I have learned to use the water allot. I could not think of using any other coil. I have the tornado.
