coils...need some info????????

Ok I have a let"s say 10 "coil concentric ...and a 10" dd coil...Now I now the concentric does a cone...and the dd does a blade....which one would go deeper...seems to me the concentric?...does the dd blade, go as deep as the cone?..If the blade goes deeper or the same ..what is the use in having a concentric?????????????

Concentrics usually go a little deeper but they pinpoint better and discriminate better that the DD's.

"Horses for courses"
Concentrics will punch a little deeper in low mineralized ground whereas the DD will go deeper with better stability in highly mineralized ground!
Gentlemen choose your weapons!!

Cheers

Rob..

As the two posts above but don't be taken in by the concentrics have a cone detection pattern and double D types a wiper blade one because some do not.

I WAS REALLY JUST WONDERING IF THE DD COIL BLADE PATTERN GOES AS DEEP?...IF A TEN INCH CONCENTRIC GOES EIGHT INCHES DOES THE TEN INCH DD GO JUST AS DEEP?....IF IT DID I WOULD SEE NO REASON FOR A CONCENTRIC?

mascard-----Writeings from at least two WELL KNOWN experts say they do (concentrics & DD's get the same depth)--I'm sure there are others that say the same thing.----Still others say that concentrics get better depth than DD's.---I know that DD's DO "cone in" a LITTLE from the ends.---In other words--it isn't a straight "knife blade" all the way across & I have yet to see a DD that's "hot" clear out to the ends of the "knife blade" (at least on the ones I've had).-----As has already been pointed out--although concentrics CAN get some good depth, you have that bad coneing effect (on deep targets) & have to overlap your swings waaaay more than with DD's.----To be considered to & a lot of it is in your ground conditions ---if your ground is highly mineralized, a DD (because of it's nature & makeup) will get you better depth in those conditions than a concentric as a DD handles that type of ground much better.---In more favoreable (less mineralized) ground there probably isn't much difference (depth wise) in the two coils.-----Speaking for myself, because of the highly mineralized areas I hunt in, I prefer a DD "hands down" over a concentric because (for me & where I hunt) they are so much more smoother running (quieter), get much better coverage and yes, get better depth (again, that's for me & in the ground I hunt in).-----So, I guess the bottom line is----try both types of those coils out (one against the other) in your ground & hunt areas.---Test them on "flagged targets" from an actual hunt also.---Do some of this & you will get the answer to your own question.--------Del

First thing I note is that very few manufacturers make BOTH types (concentric and wide-scan) in the same size which makes it very difficult to compare. Second, some makes and models were designed intentionally to work with a particular coil configuration and they might not favor the other design. If you look at the major manufactures, such as White's, Garrett, Minelab, the First Texas lines, and Tesoro, I can only think of the 7" and 5

Monte I do like the way you explain things to all of us on here.I personally seem to learn something from you each time i read a post from you. Thanks for the tip on straight line scanning of the coil and easier over lapping.I will give that a try next time out with either the std concentric or the dd coil on my omega.hav e a great weekend everyone...Markmac

There is no clear cut answer. He will have to try both types of coils in his ground and hunting style to see what works best for him. The general rule of thumb is the DD and SEF type of coils works best for most users in very mineralized ground. At least it does for me.

Hi Larry im in galesburg illinois i see that your in Illinois as well, just wanted to say hi and thank you for all the help you lend to others on here. This place is like a library of knowledge if people will just take the time to read a lot of the great imformation posted here by you and Monte and all the others.Yes time in the field is like on the job training dont you think but to learn a few pointers and lessons from others on here comes as a help to us all if we take that knowledge out in the field to maybe increase our finds a little more or to make that time in the field even more enjoyable...Markmac

Hi Markmac. You have some nice places to hunt around there, Lake Story still has some nice silver to be found and the fairgrounds in Knoxville goes back to the mid 1850's and was a Civil war training camp. I live in Eureka, East of Peoria but we get around the State on little hunting trips.

Hi Larry, I happen to live on lake story and thats the park i have done all my hunting so far this year.i HAVE BEEN THINKING OF GOING TO THE FAIRGROUNDS in time but have spent the past month at lake story trying to learn the new Omega and it is a large park as you seem to know.Your not that far from me about an hour so im familiar somewhat with Eureka being close to peoria.I work at the gm and chrys jeep dealer in galesburg so know of most the dealerships in your area. Was nice to hear back from you Larry and best of luck to you this summer...Markmac

mascard----You're being awful quiet---do you feel all this has helped you with your question?---I hope so! -------Del

Unfortunately, for me, we've been getting pelted with heavy winds, very heavy rain, and on-and-off hail storms the past few days and it's supposed to continue into the weekend. With the nasty weather, a meeting tomorrow, and being busy trying to wrap up our contest for this year I've been swamped this week and my detecting will be hampered for another 3 or 4 days. :(

From your and Larry(IL) comments it sounds like you've got a very good site right there in your lap! Happy Hunting and may your weather be pleasant.

Monte

Hi Monte,i hope your weather clears up we have had nothing but rain for the past 10 days it seems here also but today is sunny and going to be 80 so hopefully after work today i will be able to hit the park for a few hours. Not sure which coil will be using this evening but i will make sure i use straight line swinging and im going to force myself to slow that swing rate down not that i swing fast but its some times hard to keep a slower pace in such a large area but i have to remember take it slow and over lap and use what we learn from others on here....Yes it is nice to have the lake behind my back yard and the park across the lake so it only takes a few min to drive to the other side and start having a little fun.Its been a good place to learn about the Omega and i have kept myself there trying the different coils and how they perform or should i say how i learn to understand them lol.I still like that std coil but im going to keep that 11 inch dd on for today and work it slow before changing back to the ellitical std coil or maybe the 5 inch dd....Hope you can get out soon Monte and have a little fun....Markmac

So what kind of coils are whites smaller coils such as the 5.3 coils then?

n/t

Have to disagree with you on this one... DD coils pinpoint much better (for me, at least) than concentric
coils. This is because there is a very sharp cutoff on the front center edge of a DD coil. With my bigfoot coil,
I can pinpoint within 1/4 inch on targets 3 inches or less deep 90 per cent of the time. I'm not nearly that accurae
with a concentric unless it's a small one like the 5.3. I do agree that the concentric coils seem to go a little
deeper.

Good discusion, I perfer to hunt with a DD. We have some areas with higher ground mineralization here, and I believe my Xterra performs better with the DD in many of the places I hunt. I also just like to hunt with the DD, less overlap, good coverage and I like the pinpointing of a DD. with a 6" DD I do pretty good in trash. So now I am looking at another machine to do even better in the trash.
