Coils for small targets

Hermann

Dear All,
I am using my Explorer II for nugget hunting. Our nuggets are small, usually not bigger than 3-5mm. The Explorer with its normal 10,5" coil just gets them, very close, if I push up the gain to maximum. The rivers are full of trash, mostly iron (that

Coil size is definitely a factor in how small a target is detected. As you know most gold detector have a frequency range in the 50khz to 60khz or higher. This is also an important consideration in how small a target is detected. Lower frequencies detect deeper but are less sensitivity to small targets. Higher frequencies detect to less depth than low frequencies but are more sensitivity to smaller targets.

Whiich small coil to use is a question that is best answered by people that that have used them in my opinion. I have not used the smaller coils for gold nugget hunting. However, for heavy trash and detecting smaller target I can and would suggest a 5" coil for the type of hunting you describe. I don't think I would go with anything larger than 7.5".

Hermann, Both the Sunray X-5 & the Detecht (EXcelerator) 5" coils have some great reviews, so you're good with one of those, myself I have the Detecht 5" but I cannot give you a review since my Explorer II isn't here yet to try it out, but probably next week I will and I'll let you know.

I use a 5" EXcelerator coil but have had only one opportunity to hunt small nuggets. I found 3 and it was amazingly effective. Unfortunately I was only there for a day.
Living in the mid-west, we do not make nugget hunting part of our regular hunting experience but I use the 5" coil frequently where higher discrimination is needed, in small confined spaces and in high junk areas. At times, it far surpasses the standard coil and my WOT coil... and pinpointing is a no-brainer!
