Coil Trouble already

My new Discovery 2200 developed a problem already. Only had it 10 days. The coil wire cover,(black insulator) pulled loose from the coil and the wires are shorting out causing constant signals every time it is moved. I saw another BH detector at an outing last week with the same problem. Is this a Bounty Hunter inherent problem, or do other makes have the same issue. I called Bounty Hunter and was told to send the coil back for replacement, which i did today. Will see what happens.

I had a coil go bad as soon as it was submerged in a puddle, it was my pioneer 202 bh. Apparently the coil wasn't sealed properly when it was made, I sent it back to BH and they sent me a new one. I was never reimbursed for the postage and insurance. The coil lasted me another 9 yrs, it is now acting up again, won't pick up a quarter or anything silver. Oh well, I have have other machines. Yea, it says on their site that they pay the Return shipping. Ohh well, it was only $5 to ship it to them. Be worth it to get a coil that was assembled right and works like it should.

Be very careful not to over-tighten the cable around the shaft near the coil. Leave some slack. I learned that the hard way long ago. JJ

Thanks. I am real new to this and that might have been the cause but it was kinda messing up off and on since i first got it so maybe a bad connection from the factory?

Bought a new detector from Kellyco and got a BH Pioneer 505 for $95 as a bonus.

Unlike most other detectors, the cable to coil seal is just a molded in thing ... not a very good water tight seal.
I put some thick super glue around the cable where it enters the coil and worked it down into the space around the coil wire to help make and keep a good water tight seal. I can see this is a weakness in the BH detector line and I doubt the coil would have been working after one dunk in salt water.
They need a better seal and some sort of strain relief on their coils.

The Pioneer 505 also came with a 4" nugget coil ... cute ... and all for $95 ... cant beat a deal like that.

Yea i thought it was a weak spot. I also have a 4" coil and i put Gorilla Glue around it as soon as i saw what the other one had done. I was wondering if a cable more like an old coiled Phone cord would be better?

I can't figure that connection problem Iv'e had a 202 got at walmarts probably close to 10yrs ago never had a problem with it have used it in salt water and every other place -haven't had it out in a while since getting the F5 but imagine its still ok.I can see something like that happening on newer stuff being that quality control doesn't exist anymore -you did good to seal it first- salt water is very corrosive to wireing-any boat owner will tell ya this

Here is a photo of the coil and coil wire after it is sealed with thick super glue.
Hopefully that will keep water from entering the coil and damaging it.
