coil treatment coating?

Tesoro says my widescan is cracked and water got in, not a factory fault so thats my problem, not covered under warranty. its a 1986 Eldorado with a 8 1/2 inch widescan. ok its old. my freshwater beach monster. my question is would there happen to be a way to seal the coils around connectors with an aftermarket substance, maybe even the whole coil. coil covers get brittle too. the other question is would it void a warranty? if one applied. cant buy new toys for a long while. maybe a clear coat stubstance like on cars Tesoro?

I'd guess that some of the silicon sealers or rubber sealers that set up after applying would work around the connections. As to a crack, I'd make sure the coil was dry and working properly again, then seal the crack with epoxy or a fiberglass combination. I had the same problem with a coil and it worked just fine after it dried out, but hunting in wet grass for a while would let the moisture in and it would act up again. I had sent it in and Tesoro found the crack, but I paid to replace the coil so never got a chance to try to repair it. In the big picture, a new coil is the best repair if you can swing it.

If you want to repair a crack in the coil body, use a mixture of ABS plastic and MEK.

Put pieces of plastic in a plastic applicator bottle from a craft store and add MEK, about 50/50 blend. The consistency should be like toothpaste, not too dry, not too runny. Apply it on the crack or any area you wish to strengthen.
It hardens in a couple hours and sets in about 24hrs as hard as the coil shell. If you match plastic color, it is almost invisible. If you need to build up an area, just wait a couple hours between applications.
This plastic bond is the same as the coil body. Its not an adhesive, its a weld. It will fuse with the coil body just like a weld so you will never have to worry about it separating from the coil body.

I'm sure this will void the warranty on a good coil (like sealing your coil cover with ABS), but if its not covered...have at it.

well since it aint covered i have nothing to loose. its coming apart soon, getting dried and sealed back up! thanks guys

The only UV flexable coating I know of is Polyurathane, window/door caulk.......Home depot or Lowes have it (caulking tube size only + $5+ each) comes in white or black.

Takes about 3 days to setup, wear pull on disposable gloves as it is messy. It will seal around connectors & stay flexable.

On the bottom of the coil if you don't use a coil cover you can use PC-7 two part non metalic epoxy to build up the highly worn areas, it can be bought at Ace Hardware.

I myself usully use a coil cover to protect my investment, cleaning & weight is not a issue as I swing a Tesoro.

As to a coating auto wax applyed to the coil may give it some UV protection on the top + you could give them (Tesoro) a call to see if they had a better idea or product.

I probably should have mentioned, I've built my own coils for my PI detector. The ABS method is how the two halves of the coil shell are fused together.
ABS is what the coil shell is made of. Try it some time on a chunk of ABS to see how it works. I haven't used anything else since I discovered ABS plastic welding.

Shows my Sovereign coil that I fused the coil cover on to the coil body.

........as far as appling it around the wire connection....I do not do it....you will need something that is flexible when it dries.....the epoxy is mainly for coil repair & coating so that you don't have to use a coil cover....I mainly beach hunt & sand always get inside the coil covers & causes falsing.........

Yes, I was referring only to the body. The cable and strain relief is a different animal.
Good luck with your repair.

Does any extra thickness of plastic around the coil affect the depth of the metal detector? (from building up a weld of plastic) What about coil covers?

I always wondered that when people put stickers on their coil. I realize a sticker is thin. But even if it takes away a fraction of an inch, I prefer the extra fraction of depth.

Once water gets inside of a coil, its ruined and could never be tuned again. It throws everything off inside.
If we can not get in the coil if it needs to be retuned, then you may have to purchase a new coil.

is the widescan eldorado coil a tuned coil? i have heard yea and nay, Allcav you are the tech.

ditto..... works well.

Both the original Eldorado and the the latest version had manual ground balance in both modes. So these coils did not need to be tuned to the machine or the machine to the coil.

thanks allcav and everyone. i will try and do something with it. i dont believe in tossing something that might can have one last hooorah!
