coil stress crack

waterwayne

New member
I purchased a new sea hunter 2 6-24 -11 and while inspecting it tonight i found a crack starting on the inside bottom of the loop. Can water get in and damage or is it a wire foam filled coil? It will flex and expand. Will it cause a falsing in salt water? Garrett would cover it wouldn't you think? Not even 2 months old.I ordered the 10x14 till i can get this 1 fixed.Should or can i coat new coils with marine epoxy? Will it hurt the warranty? Thanks in advanced.Good luck hunting!

If it were my coil I would not try to repair but send it back to Garrett. Call them first and under the circumstances they may just send you one right out. Hope so. Good luck.

Garrett will take care of it, but that being said you should definitely consider getting a coil cover for the new one. Looks like you're detecting in some seriously rough bottom to have that heavy of scratching in just 2 months of use.

I did not see any covers listed for the sea hunter 2 thats why i asked about maybe epoxy.I see 1 listed that says for all 8.5 inch coils .Would that be a solid flat cover?if so it will fill with sand like a frisbee.I will make the calls to find out .Anyone seen or using a cover now?

Definitely go with marine epoxy if you want to do something about it yourself. If it were up to me, I'd be using the 14" all the time anyway, so hopefully your 14" will be in good condition. When you get your new coil, coat it with epoxy or something before you use it in the water.

Garrett don't have any coil covers for water use, don't bother. The covers they have for land use are overpriced.

I tried the tool dip spray when i started to see the wear ad was recoatin regularly.I was going to purchase a 10x14 lightly used coil and noticed cracks in another pat of the coil so i did not buy it.The gentalman did not notice them till i pointed them out.he hunted dry with it.The scratches you see are super magnified but not as bad as they look.I am peeling the rubber tex spay off ,you can see a portion of the coil still covered smooth.I keep the coil coated like the 2 oclock to 3 o clock position .crack is at900 position next to or in line with the shaft.
Anyone know what adverse effect it has ie. falsing shortting out?

That crack could be the coating you have on the coil, if you can peel it dig a little to see better around that crack

no unfortunatly not.The coating peels easy it is in the coil no doubt. I peeled almost all of it off checking it.I did leave a section on so you can see the coverage coil coat gives you.

Just makes you wonder if any "Salt" water has entered the coil at all..

Being that it's under warranty.. I'd send it in and hope that they replace it for "Free"... I wouldn't epoxy it while it's under warranty..

what I would do for the time being until you send it in.. I'd fill a 5 gal bucket with fresh water and soak the coil after every trip. just to be on the safe side.
If your experiencing "Falsing" this may be the reason why.

Marine epoxy:

WW, I posted about a similar Garrett's coil problem and called Garrett's customer service department Rep.

The young fellow assured me that the coils are covered inside with two or more coatings of epoxy sealer prior to the final plastic coating being installed.

A very close inspection of the "cracks" I found revealed to me that it was a less than perfect job of finishing off the edge where the bottom cover and the top came together. On my coil the "crack" doesn't penetrate into the coil and is only a cosmetic issue which doesn't cause any problems.

I was assured also that Garrett gets coils coated with all sorts of "protective"coatings and hasn't failed to honor a warranty yet because of these coatings.

The available coil cover that fits most of these coils are disks that hydroplane under water and are a pain to use, therefore most Hunters use a coating of one kind or another.

This is my second experience with coil damage. My Infinium 8" Mono wore through on the bottom surface a few years ago and it was right in the middle of prime hunting season, so I "fixed it" rather than send it to Garrett and be without it..

I rinsed it with clean water, then alcohol and then I carefully dried it out. Marine epoxy was then used to fill the voids and I coated the whole coil with tool handle coating in bright yellow.

It still is one of my favorite coils and works great!!

Good luck with your coil Friend and know that Garrett will take care of if you decide to send it in, but it also may not be necessary.
