Coil Selection for Deep Silver?

Hey guys,

Not new to the forum, but new to the X Terra. I acquired an X-70 thru a trade and so far I love it. In fact, I have a 705 on the way!

Being new to the X, I do have a couple of questions. I mostly hunt for old silver at parks, schools, old houses, etc. On my first outing with the X I found a nice silver dime at about the 6-7 inch range using the standard coil. My confusion is on the best frequency for deep silver? I have read where some recommend the Low for deep silver and others recommend the High DD for deep silver, so I am a little confused. Can anyone kind of set me straight on the best frequency for my type of hunting?

Also, with the 6 inch High DD coil, when the circle is full and I have my best reading, do I dig at the center of the coil or the front or rear tip like other brands DD coils?

Any help, recommendations, or clarifications would be greatly appreciated!

I really enjoy the 70 and I'm looking forward to the future with it!

Any of the coils will find silver. The bigger question than frequency is coil size and design. I live in an area with moderate mineralization. By moderate, I can properly adjust the GB of my X-70 or 705 with ground phase readings in the mid-30's to mid-40's. If I get in an area that requires a ground balance adjustment that puts the ground phase reading at a number below 28, I feel I can get better results with a DD coil. If I am hunting a wide open area, with fewer than 2 or 3 targets per sweep, the 9--inch concentric does just fine for me. If there are 5 or more targets per sweep, I opt for the 6-inch DD coil for better target separation. I don't use the small DD due to the ground phase, just separation. I mentioned that all the frequencies will find silver, and they will. The MF and LF work better for me, on deeper silver. That is why the only HF coil I use is the small one I mentioned earlier. Both the 3 kHz and 7.5 kHz will do the job. But I like the 3 kHz better due to how the audio responds on low conductive targets. I hunt in zero discrimination, or with the +48 nothed out. I also use multiple tone mode and hunt by ear. The sound that a deeply buried piece of iron will break up as you slowly drag the coil over it, when using the 3 kHz coil. Not so much with the other frequencies.

To pinpoint, you can either drag the coil back and dig at the tip of the coil when the sound drops off. Or you can dig where the rod connects to the coil if you are using the circle in the display. Simple air tests will tell you exactly how your coil is responding. And by the way, when you get that 705, try out the sizing pinpoint mode. AWESOME feature! Saves me having to jumb back and forth between Prospecting mode and hunt mode, to determine the size and shape of a target. HH Randy

I thought the lable was the sweet spot. However I do not use pin point mode much. I usually center in the coil and mark a line then check the line next turn 90 degrees and repeat then X marks the spot. Rarely off by more than 2 inchs. Give it a try. When I do pinpoint mode I drag coil back till I drop the target and it is now at the tip of the coil. Or a combo of each.

Okay, great info! I'll do a little experimenting and see how it goes. Thanks for the info!

Anything else that is a "must have" or info that I definitely need to know about the 705?

If you are enjoying the X-70, you'll really enjoy using the 705. The extra Pattern mode or backlight feature aren't big deals to me. But I like the Pinpoint Sizing, Tracking GB offset and appreciate the extra depth and quicker reset speeds offered by the 705. In case you haven't read this, here is the link to an article I wrote about the X-TERRA. And even if you have read it, take a browse through it again now that you're getting the 705. You may pick up a couple tips you overlooked before. HH Randy

I went back and reread the original post and Randy was right for locating with the 6" DD. Although that is still how I pinpoint with all 3 DD coils I have.

the 3khz is a KILLER on deep silver and copper coins, best coil I ever used on the x70. After I got it my other coils just laid collecting dust.
