Coil Sand

Boothbay

New member
I'm new to the Sovereign and yesterday it was one of my first beach hunts (it was cold). I got some signals that sounded like targets, dug the hole, chased the signal in the diggings pile and after a few seconds, poof, it was gone. It could have been small metal that kept slipping through my scoop, but I was wondering if sand under your coil (noticed it when I got home) would cause any of that.

Also, I assume it does, but would spraying the coil with bed liner void the warranty?

Thanks for any help.

BB 2 things you might have dug up some rusty sand a piece of iron that turned to dust that will drive anyone crazy , second i don't use coil covers just a pain in the ass i don't care if i get the bottom of the coil get,s scratched it,s not like iam swinging over jagged rock,s , if you find it necessary to cover the coil give it a few coats of white spray paint . I read many peoples posts saying that sand between the coil and cover will cause falsing..I have never experienced that yet .. more likely it was a very small piece of metal that slipped thru the holes of your scoop... stud ear rings and ear ring backs will often act this way as will tiny metal scaps..... on the other hand if you ever get a deep signal that you just cant seem to dig deep enough to get to and then all the sudden the signal disappears chances are whatever you are chasing has fallen to the bottom of the hole just out of reach of the coil..1 or 2 more scoops deeper into the hole will often recover the target.... ive heard that spraying your coil will void warranty but I don't know for sure.... if you do spraypaint your coil make sure whatever you are coating it with is metal free....

BBS isnt nearly as sensitive to minerals under the coil cover like the FBS. If you were in the wet salt sand it could be just the salt/water or black sand and over sensitivity of your coil. Also... if you were using tracking.. repeatly going over a target can make it disappear. Bottle caps do it too.... they WRAP AROUND with a high tone then disappear or null once out based on low disc. Iron sounds good deep.... but once you take scoop off .... it can null or disappear on you. So does.... bleeding from some metals like copper. It causes a large halo, but once disturbed the target may be to small to pick up and the halo disappears.

Yes ML will void your warranty with bed liner spray.... but not epoxy. Also.... they require you use the SKID PLATE to protect the coil if it comes with one....if they find out you didnt they can void the warranty. On my Xcal I went thru 4 in less than 6 mos. The sand just rubbed them thin and they cracked..... they are to thin and my coil stays on the sand. So i added loctite marine epoxy on my SKID PLATE...... havent replaced on since. Ive not had an issue with the Sov coil or cover..... i believe they are just made better than the Xcals.

Sometimes a thin target will turn sideways once dug and "disappear". I kick the sand around and rescan, sometimes going to all metal from discriminate will locate it (or locate iron in the sand that could be masking it).. More than once the little demon was hiding in my scoop (or stuck to the magnet at the bottom side of my scoop). I have had some "rust grenades" that disintegrate once dug, but I have always seen some rust stains in the sand. If it is a round target, it can roll away a few feet, or even hop back in the hole. My feeling is that if I got a good signal initially, it is there somewhere. I just have to find it.
I have had sand under my coil cover, but it never caused falsing, at least on South Carolina beach sand.
Have fun with your Sovereign, and enjoy the rings - they will come!
