Coil question...

RedMan8286

New member
I just bought my MXT about a month ago, got some heavy mineralization in my area and some places a lot of trash. As of now I only have the stock 9.5 coil and was wanting some opinions before my next coil purchase. I plan to goto my local hobby shop and get their opinion on coils for this area too but can never get by while they are open due to work schedule. I am considering the Eclipse Shooter DD 4x6 coil or the Eclipse 5.3 6x6 coil, of the two which seems to be the better coil.... I also plan to use the MXT to prospect gold at times also.... Any input would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks in advance guys, happy hunting!

The DD Eclipse coils do the best job in high mineralization on the MXT,M6 and the DFX. The 6x10DD Eclipse is a great coil on the MXT and it covers a fair amount of ground with pretty good separation in trash. The smaller 4x6DD Eclipse does well in high trash areas allowing you to get great separation between targets. The 5.3 Eclipse coil does real well in high trash areas allowing good target separation with more depth than the smaller 4x6DD Eclipse but does not do quiet as well in high mineralization. I have all three of the coils mentioned and they all work great for different reasons. I use the 6x10DD Eclipse coil 90% of the time though. Also the DD Eclipse coils work better for prospecting if you plan to hunt for nuggets.

Hey Redman....Bill G. is right on. I have the three coils but I pretty much use the 5.3 about 98% of the time. Depending on where we all live and the kind of conditions we're used to, we will all have our own "favorite" coil. I came up with my favorite by checking an area with one coil and marking the hits I was curious about. Then changed coils and went over the same places to see the difference in readings. Flip a coin, get one then try for the other coil in a couple of months or so. Ebay is a good place to check. Good luck and happy hunting......................

I have the 8x14 DD coil. What do you all think about that coil? The ground here is very mineralized and quite a bit of trash.

Hi' I hunt in and around sports fields/tot lot's etc most of the time and have found that my KellyCo 3.5X5" Execellerator PRO II is best and have found a lot of clad (over $7.50 in 2-1/2 hours one day). Just my opinion and HH. olegator

Have and have used the 4X6, the 5.3, the 9.5 and the 6X10. The 4X6 is by far superior in trashy parks etc. at the cost of a bit of depth. The 5.3 is okay, but I find myself using the 4X6 mostly for the trashy areas. For me the 9.5 is least useful, but I like the 6X10 very much and it is in use most of the time except when the trash is heavy, then the 4x6 shooter is the choice.
Hope this is helpful.

Little help please.

I see the 6x10 coil mentioned but can't seem to find any. I went to Kellyco and I see the 4x6 and the 6" but don't see a 6x10 for the mxt. I must be blind or just got lost on their website!:surprised:

Thanks.

Ok Redman....here's another 2?. All the contributors to your question are exactly right. Alot of it is preference. I live in Western NC and I think I live on a large asteroid with the mineralization in this area. Aside from the stock coil, I have the 4X 6, 5.3 Eclipse and 8" Excelerator. The one that stays on my MXT 99.5% of the time is the 5.3 Eclipse. It gets in and around most areas pretty good and pinpoints right on. I'm looking for a second one as a back up for when this one craps out from exhaustion...:stretcher: My opinion...??....go for the 5.3....but you know what they say about opinions.
Good luck and happy hunting................

scroll down to Whites...count straight down 5...for 6 x 10...$152

Thanks Gregg. Now the really hard part. Telling my wife I need another coil for a metal detector that hasn't been touched in over a year. All I hear now is... "Why don't ya sell that darn thing, no more than you use it. That sure was money well spent!". Ouch! :punch:

Heavy mineralization, areas with lots of trash, and hunting for small nuggets???? Go with the Eclipse DD 4X6 coil. It will work better than the 5.3 with those conditions.

Are you saying the 4 x 6 elliptical loop for the MXT because I do not see the eclipse 4 x6 DD. I do see the 6 x10 eclipse DD this is all on Kellco. I am also a newbie and I am thinking the an elliptical would be better than round but I am not sure. I would like one that is good in trashy areas too. It sound like the DD is the way to go but the more I read I get more confused except the 950 coil is not that great. Please give some insight, again being a newbie of course I would like to find rings and coins and then try for some small gold nuggets down the road which do you feel would do the overall job Thanks in advance

Guys, I own a 6x10 and use it a in many situations. It is a very good coil. But some guys are giving the newer guys the idea that the stock 9.5 is not a good coil. Now it might not work for you in your ground but it works well for me. In my ground the stock is deeper than the 6x10. I use the 6x10 for other reasons and at the beach. Here is an a post by Greg. He's the guy in the Whites M6 instruction videos and in the beach instruction video with Jimmy Sierra.

Even Jeff Foster says until the ground gets to a 4, the 9.5 is deeper, has a truer depth reading, and the VDI locks better. Just remember guys we are giving our opinion of how coils work for us. Rob

Thanks Rob. I have learned that I need to quit trying to replace my 9.5 coil before I give it a chance and instead concentrate on coils that will compliment it instead. Maybe a smaller coil for better separation in trashy areas. Round or elliptical? who knows!

I told everyone that this winter was going to be a big learning time for me and so far it SURE has been one. I sure love all the various comments and ideas that I am reading and most importantly it got me to bring out the good ol MXT from the cobwebs and shine er all up like a new penny.

I have a 8x14 DD Eclipse Deep Scan coil. Do any of you ever use this coil? I used it in Stanton, AZ hunting for nuggets. I only had 2 days to spend, did not get lucky but found small boot tacks etc at some depth. What is the general opinion of this coil. Thanks for any feedback.
