Coil Question..?

peg leg red

New member
First Off, Thanks to all for info. and replies on this site...
>> I am using an Elite with a handmade straight shaft that I made longer to cover more beach.. I now use the T-10" coil that came with the elite.. I am considering a bigger coil for more sand coverage..
(Question) ?..... What is the best suited coil for the Elite , for weight , sensitivity , etc. ??? . I am thinking about a Sunray, or a WOT,, or any other,if there is something better,, I hunt dry, wet and shallow water . I use Jolly Roger dual-control headphones now , if that mekes a difference..
I guess question # 2 is what is your opinion for headphones for the Sov.Elite.??I have had this beeper for about 3 mos.now and she is starting to talk to me..Yeah!!! Thanks in advance,, PegLegRed

the model I use is the predator . I find them to be very lound and the tones seem to seprate a bit ''crisper'' than the other three pair I tried ...........

For a bigger coil for the Sovereigns I like the Sun Ray S12 coil myself. I did the field test on it when it came out and was very surprised at how well this coil worked and the depth I was getting. It even separated real good for a big coil too and wasn't that heavy either. Now on headphones it may be wise to use what you have learned the Sovereign with, but if you were to change I found the Timberwolfs were the ones I like. These had the volume I needed as I am hard of hearing plus I like the tones with the Sovereign with them as I can tell my deep targets better. On my Explorer I like my Troy Pros for the volume it has on the Explorer and find the Sun Ray Pro Golds have a great tone too, but not enough volume for me, but seem to be find for those that don't need the volume.

Hey Red........

The S-12 will be the lightest large coil. Since you made a longer rod, I doubt you would want to swing anything heavier unless you really like punishment.

Won't comment on headphones as we all have different requirements.

Art, and others,,Thanks for replies,,, How much heavier is the Wot than the S-12.... I am working on a design now for the straight rod that may compensate for the weight difference......In everyones opinion opinion what is the 'BEST' big coil for the Elite, for performance and stability ? Or.. what about custom coils for specific machines and sand content?? Has any Elite users tried custom "BIG" coils on their (Deeper-Beeper) ?

Timberwolves are sounding like a good choice... I have about 3 or so mos. on the Jolly Rogers and that is the only ones I have ever used on the Elite.. Anyone ever used JR's and tried others on the elite and what is the difference ? good or bad? ..... PLR

Can't answer that. Don't know exact weights of the different coils.
Don't know of any custom coils either.

Most who want a large coil for beach or wide open spaces use the WOT. You can get a bigger 18" Detech, but that size coil is reportedly not going to be as good on smaller objects.

I won't use a coil larger than 12.5" myself because of size and weight.

I have tired a bigger coil and found the 12 inch for the weight and easier to use then the bigger coil plus I got better depth and better response with the S12 over the bigger one. I used it mostly for park and ballfield hunting
