Coil Question

Is there a depth advantage to having the 17" coil over the stock 11" or does it just provide a better sweep coverage? If there is a depth advantage, what would be your estimate in depth over the stock coil? Thanks for any ideas and opinions. JodyReb...

Definitely an advantage, but how much depends on your soil. In good moist loam, I'd say 50% more depth is possible. In wet sand, its enough that I get tired of digging deep signals and think "god not another deep one". (yeah, I know; thats a good thing).

Note that I can swing a 17 about 2 hours before my shoulder will be sore for days afterward(that happened to me on a 4hr hunt). So I recommend a harness of some kind; at least until you can build up the extra muscle. With a harness, I can go until the battery dies.

Depth advantage depends on the size of your target, and the ground you hunt in. In the dirt I hunt, I have seen a 2 - 3 inch increase in depth for dimes and quarters. Can it go deeper? IDK, the deepest I have dug coins was at 12 inches, Maybe thats as deep as I can get, maybe thats all the deeper the targets are for me.

I do know that I have dug beer cans at 3 feet on a beach and they were loud and solid signals.

I am a turf hunter and have highly mineralized ground. There is only an inch or so gain for me but I still use it a lot.
10" is the deepest I have gotten on a dime with the big coil.
I have found lots of 9" coins with both coils but the big coil will hit harder on them.

Honestly in my experience with both coils on the beach I think the depth is pretty even on coin sized targets, but obviously you are gaining coverage with the 17". Anybody else notice the depth reading on the 17" is sometimes off? It might read 12" but the target is usually only about 6" down. I have experienced this on the beach pretty regularly. I've never used the larger coil on the dirt however.

Yes. It seems the depth reading was not calibrated to the 17" coil. The first time out, I started getting those 12" hits and thought I detecting into a whole new layer of targets. Then I dug a few of them and realized what was happening.

I appreciate all the feedback. My dilemma is that I am hunting an old defunct recreation area that I have hunted to death with my stock coils and no longer get signals. I feel there's still stuff there but hate hunting 2 to 3 hours with no response. Thank you for your time and I wish you all great hunting. JodyReb...

You can pick one up used around $280 to $320. If it doesn't work for you can flip it to get most of your money back.
