Coil Question

I have a question regarding coils. I've had my Silver Umax for a month now and it has the standard coil. I've found clad and trash, nothing of significant value yet but it's been just so much fun that I'm not complaining. What other coil should I buy for my machine. I've researched the tesoro forums and I see folks like the 10x12, some the 4" and others the 5.75. Which is the best second coil to have with it and why? I'm primarily hunting coins and jewelry. The dirt is mostly clay (I live in SoCal) and I hunt parks a lot and plan on hitting a tot lot soon.

Thanks

Dave

If you hunting sites are pretty clean (not a lot of trash) then the bigger coil may be the way to go, but if are running into a far amount of trash I would go with the 5 3/4".
Now that little 4" is would be pretty good around the tot lots.

Can't tell you which way to go but I am going for the 5 3/4" for my next coil.

I'd recommend the 53/4. Good depth for its size, yet it separates in trashy areas well. Swing it a bit slower in trashy areas and you'll be surprised at what you find.

I to would recommend the 5 3/4 coil to search trashy areas & to be able to swing closer to the steel post/playground equipment, picking up those elusive targets masked by overload of larger coil electromagnetic fields around steel.

Go with the 5 3/4" coil. It is worth every penny you spend on it for hunting in trash or just hunting period. When I got my 5 3/4" coil for my Silver I took it to an old church that has a fairly small yard but has produced several silver coins and a few indian head pennies in the past.
I thought had pretty much got all the coins in the church yard before, but the first pass down the side yard of the church produced a 1917 mercury dime and 4 indian head pennies....all less than 5 inches deep. I never imagined that I had missed those coins before, but they were masked by junk
and it took the small coil to put them in my pouch, plus it pinpoints spot on the targets. It is a must have coil......HH

Not to mention that a smaller coil will be more sensitive to fine jewelery.
The 10x12 works great on the silver, I found that it had minmal loss of sensitivity compared to the stock, but it did gain about an inch and a half in depth. Only used the 10x12 in the less trashy places lie fields and such.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. What's the best and cheapest way to get another coil? Would you contact a dealer or go directly to Tesoro?

I would contact some of the forum dealers.

So what happens different when I am using my 8" standard coil that came on my Silver Umax in a trashy area instead of a 5.75 that is recommended? if I was going to spend $89.00 for the coil I would just go ahead & buy the Compandre with the smaller coil which is approx $160.00. I was going to get that one for my 1st detector but thought spending a little more- $254.00 would find me more treasures! I think we need to get a second one later anyway when we can finance it with our treasure finds! Cathy

The 8 inch brown coil is one of my favorites, it will do well in the trash if you raise & sweep the coil a few inches higher above the ground. I have found that this technique works effectivly to reduce trash signals and reduce target masking, saves money spent on a new coil.

The Compadre with the 53/4 coil makes a nice back up or second machine. On the other hand, with the Silver you can change coils either direction, larger or smaller and adjust the sensitivity as need which you can't do easily on the Compadre.

I went ahead and ordered my 5.75 from Richard at Backwoods. What a class guy. I've only been around MD folks for a couple of months now but I'm convinced that if more people in America were MD'ers the country would be a better place.
