coil question?

Hello everyone just wondering if anyone has used the Whites Eclipse Deepscan DD 1400 Search Coil or the Whites Eclipse DD (6x10) Search Coil and what thay didnt like and what thay liked im considering another coil (maybe a excellerator coil 10x12 but thay are heavy) besides my Eclipse 9.5" Search Coil for old farm fields thank you for your time. sasquache

Never used the 1400 (I've read many times that their pretty heavy) but I've used the 6x10 quite a bit. The main advantage IMO is the coverage you get as opposed to a similar size round concentric. I mainly use the 5.3 (little better depth, I.D. & separation) but will go to the 6x10 if coverage is an issue. The elliptical shape is good to nose into tighter spots and terrain also and the solid coil design is absolutely essential in snaggy areas. Not sure what type of fields you hunt but I would think this wouldn't be a bad choice if the ground is furrowed and/or uneven and you're not needing a lot of depth. If it's wide-open and relatively flat I'd hook up the biggest coil you can handle. I think your 9.5 is a good coil if it's snaggy and maybe the 12" if it's not. If you're really looking for a DD to use (ground conditions ?) then the 10"DD has good depth, coverage and it's not TOO heavy but the one main drawback (and why I only use it in specific areas) is its frustrating propensity to I.D. bottlecaps in the quarter range. I've also read good reviews on the sef 8x10 and 10x12 coils but haven't had a chance to try one yet. Hope this helps and good luck . . .!

As srf2112 says the 6X10 is good for coverage and is not all that heavy to swing. It also, due to the DD pattern, slips through trash fairly well for its size. If you read through a number of posts on different forums involving MXTs etc. you'll read where quite few folks that use the 6X10 as their most used coil, myself included. I was fortunate enough to make a good purchase on a clean, used MXT complete with the 4X6, 5.3 and 9.5 coils all on extra rods several years ago. I've added a 6X10 and a 12" to it since. I use the 9.5 and the 12 the least unless I'm hunting an open, fairly trash free area. Most of the time the 6X10 suits me very well. If the trash is a bit on the heavy side or sometimes just because, I'll use the 5.3. If I'm hunting a very trashy area and have the patience to cover a small area well, I'll put the 4X6 on. It really handles heavy trash well, but you pay for it in lost coverage and some depth. The coil selection is one of the MXT, M6 etc.s strong points in my opinion as it really adds to the versatility.

Scott and Bill are spot on and the 6X10 is a good general purpose light coil though not as deep as the 950 or D2. The 1400 DD is very heavy and I don't recommend it. My favorite coil has to be the SEF 10X12, the depth of the D2 and the coverage of the 12" it has the ground noise rejection of the 6X10. (very quiet) The only bad thing about the DD/SEF coils is they really like to ID rusty pop tops as quarters......... but there are tricks around that. I don't have the numbers handy but the 10X12 with the coil cover removed is just slightly heavier than a stock coil. The trick with hunting with larger coils is to shorten the rod so you are hunting right in front of your toes. It makes a world of a difference from those who like to hunt two feet in front of themselves.

Thank you so much for the info you have provided it sure will help me decide on the right coil. Sas

Thank you everyone for all the info it helped me in finding the right coil. sas

Get the 6x10 you will love it I have found coins at 11" vary good in trashy ground

the 6x10 is a nice coil slightly less deep but more coverage, lighter than the stock coil also

the 5.3 is another coil to consider, but I never used this one

the stock coil is deep and I liked it, but for a do everything coil, I stayed with the 6x10, it run more stable in my soils

[size=large]i for one am really attached to my D2 coil. it's about the biggest my shoulders can handle.
was wondering if Larry could give some links to tips on overcoming the bottle cap problem?

Sorry, I just now saw your bottlecap question and I don't have an answer for you. That is the big drawback with the DD/SEF coils, they sure like the rusty bottlecaps. I'm not an MXT user so I don't know the little secrets but have you tried switching to Prospecting and checking the iron probability? I think I have heard someone say something about using the tip of the coil when pinpointing and you might get a different sound or something like that. Someone will have to help me here.

Widebody,
On your bottle cap problem...
From my experience when hunting in a trashy area with rusty iron bottle caps, i find that the caps will have a "ruffer" sound to the edge of the tone.
The "trick" that I have used is to pull the coil back to the edge of the target and sweep it. it will fall off to an iron signal if it is a cap and stay strong if a quarter.
It takes some practice, but after you get the hang of the sounds you can cut back on digging a few of those caps.
That being said... a nice ring or quarter with say a rusty nail across it will have the scratchy sound also, so the only sure way to tell is to DIG...
IMHO It works for me. you just have to be able to walk away when that little voice in your head says "maybe it's not"......
Hope this helps...
