Coil Question concentric vs DD

New member
Looking at getting a new coil for the pro, is there any difference in proformance or depth between the DD and the concentric coils? Thanks for your input I appreciate any help

Concentric coils reject steel bottle caps better than the DD coils. I think a lot of it depends on what type of hunting you do. There is no one "best" coil for everything.

[size=large]from what i've read over the last year is that in more open areas where you would use the bigger coils then in our part of the country, i'm below ya in Kelso Wa., the DD coils show more benefit. then when you get down to trashy ares and use the small coils there doesn't seem to be that much benefit from a DD coil. the main idea i've picked up on is that it always comes back to you and how you hunt and where. as Jerry-wii reminds us there is no one coil. only finding the best that covers our needs. if you can afford to then you buy one of each but thats impractical for most of us.so you pick a coil or coils and learn them.pratice and become darn good with it.there's been a lot of folkssurprized by the ability of the shooter coils. you probly won't find the 10" dime or such but you will find all those previouly masked or nulled out 4"-7". enjoy yourself. what a great hobby.

The 8.5 X 11 Garrett DD coil is the best DD coil I've ever used! Not sure how Garrett did it, but the ATP/DD coil combo pinpoints spot-on! I've been trying different land detectors to find the right one for me, as I'm mainly a water hunter. I recently ordered an 8.5 X11 DD to try on a 1350 GTP- That's how much I like the newer Garrett DD!

Now if I make the ATP my land machine, (still not sure if of it's performance at a salt beach- compared to my Explorer or Infinium) I would get the smaller Garrett DD and the 4 inch concentric. But the 2 DDs would be my main use coils and I would learn them well. A larger mono might go a bit deeper- I say might because the new Garrett DD coils seem hot/deep to me... plus the DD coils simply cover ground better with less masking/ground effect! These newer Garrett DDs are not your fathers DD coils! Mono coils may become a thing of the past with better DD coil design? Even Whites is now going to DD!

As an example and though these 2 coils are not the same size, I compared the 8.5 X 11 DD on ATP to the 7X10 Mono on GTP 1350, side by side in my test garden with trash in the mix. Both machines go nearly the same depth- surprisingly deep! But there is no doubt that the DD coil finds and hits the targets faster than the Mono. I feel with the mono there is more of a chance of flat-out missing targets or trash masking.

I agree that the larger concentric coil will mask out bottlecaps better (by the sound the detector makes). I 've experienced that myself.
