Coil Question about GTAx550

Got my first used Garrett MD coming and I want to get a Sniper coil for it. I see a 4.5 is offered. I think the 550 might be a older one because the 8" and 12" coils are solid and not a spider coil. Were there different size sniper coils made for this model? Anyone have one they want to part with? Thanks JR.

Congrats on the new(used)Garrett!:beers: I've never used that particular model, but I did use the GTAx1000 for several years and it's a very similar unit. I still have and ocassionally use my old GTAx1250 and it is very similar to the GTAx550.:garrett::detecting:
You've got a vast selection of search coils to choose from to use with your machine. I understand that you have the 8.5" Crossfire 2 and the 12.5" Crossfire 2 search coils now. To be honest with you, those old (big solid round) search coils are some of my favorites. They are lighter in weight than the concentric elliptical concentric Rhinotough(you call spider)search coils and they pinpoint easier. However, those Rhinotough search coils are good. I just prefer the older ones. The Rhinotough search coils are virtually indestructable. They come in a 7"x10" elliptical concentric which is the stock search coil for this machine. Also a 9"x12" elliptical round concentric is offered. There is a 10"x14" DD available made by Garrett which is a great search coil, but it will make the detector extremely nose heavy. A better alternative to this would be the 10"x14" DD Excelerator that KellyCo sells for the Ace 250. It's much lighter in weight than the Garrett and just as deep. Alot of people don't know it, but the Ace series of search coils will work on this machine(GTAx550). So, you have the option of using the 6.5"x9" elliptical concentric stock search coil made for the Ace 250. Then there is the new Garrett 8.5"x11" DD search coil which is much lighter in weight than the older Rhinotough search coils, but just as robust. You can also use the new 6"x8" SEF Butterfly search coil that is sold by KellyCo for the Ace250. Then, finally there is the Sniper 4.5":garrett::detecting:
I think that about covers it.:wiggle:If I missed anything, maybe somebody else might chime in.
Check out Uncle Willy's field test report for the GTAx550 from Lost Treasure magazine online:
