Coil protection ..... cover versus ?

Just wondering if anyone uses anything else but covers to protect their search coils. I asked a few of the more experienced MDers in my area what they thought about the plastic covers to protect their coils ...... this after noticing no one had appeared to use any. Most replied they were a waste of money that could cause sporadic problems. Their solution was the use of an automotive spray-on undercoating used to patch worn spots underneath there vehicles.

Most of the MDer's had higher end machines than my 250. I was wondering if anyone else out there has tried this and if so ... their results. Would this offer as good as protection as a cover? Can anyone offer any opinions as why this might not be a good idea? I like the idea but don't want to cripple my detector.

I wrote a longer post and the server died when I tried to post it. The short version. I do not use coil covers. I find them to be one more thing I need to remove and maintain on my detectors especially when you hunt in the mud as I often do. The newer coils made by Garrett are super tough and can take a lot of abuse anyway.

PS Marine epoxy works great on the bottom of coils to protect them.

If you don't use your detector as a club there is no need for one. I've been at this for 44 years without using coil covers. They can cause problems if you don't keep them cleaned out often. The 250 coil is poured epoxy and tough as a nut. The only way you could hurt it would be to drive nails with it or something similar.

Had heard the negatives about covers and wasn't really sure if added protection was really needed since I don't really plan on hunting extreme terrain.

Appreciate the input!
