Coil problem with the CZ-3D, is this common? ................

Kelley (Texas)

New member
I have been using the 5" coil but decided to change back to the original 8" coil this afternoon. When done, I noticed that the coil was not working...would not give a response to a target. I disconnected and reconnected several times but it would not work. I then put the 5" coil back on the CZ-3D and it worked correctly. Evidently the 8" coil is bad. Is this a common problem with the CZ-3D? I wonder if it would be cheaper to buy a new coil rather than send this one in for repair, any comments? Kelley (Texas) :)

they mostlikely won't fix the coil, but rather tell you that the coil is bad and send you a replacement. But they will mostlikely charge you for it unless you recently purchased the CZ3d new.

On the other hand, Garrett has replaced coils free of charge on detectors that were bought used. But I don't believe Fisher is known for this kind of customer service though.

The coil may be covered under warranty. Call Fisher and ask. If you do have to get a new coil unless you hip mount get the three foot cord.
Thank You

Kelley,

I do have a problem with my 8 inch coil once in a while. You might have a similar problem like me. My coil wire has a bad connection somewhere near the plug. If I wind my coil wire around my shaft too loose it acts up. If I wind it tight and put enough tension it seems to help. If you have to pay to replace the coil you might want to play with it to see if you have a similar problem.

My problem is very similar to yours, and I am convinced that the problem is at the connector. I pulled lightly on the cable at the connector and the coil now works. This must have been a fluke, but when I get time, I will probably figure out how to take the connector off the cable and check the wires at the connector. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

A problem with the coil itself is far and few between. I would think one of the solder joints of the connector to the box is the culprit..especially if you hipmount which may cause strain in this area...

Yes, make sure the wire is wrapped kind of tight around the shaft...I did that once many years ago...Let it get too lose and have some static on my coil!

if it works its way to far into the connector it can cause a short.

how to take the connector off the cable and, you are probably correct, I think the spring had gone too far into the connector. It works great now. Thanks for the information. Bill W. was on the same thought track as you were. You folks have a great weekend! Kelley (Texas) :)
