coil overload

New member
Hi guys just a quick question for the learner-ed
Both my super 300 and 6x10 dd coils give a overload signal if i push the gain past the preset is this the norm? also the 300 coil is so chattery and the VDI numbers jump all over the place if I have the gain any higher than 31/2 even with the coil of the ground.!!!I have a 5.3 that works fine with the gain on full in fact its gets better depth than the 300 because of where i have to run the 300 to keep it stable.

Cheers Ronnie

If you're talking about the overload signal that one gets when too close to a target of any size, no, it's not normal. At least I've never gotten one with either coil you mention by simply turning the sens. up. My first thought is you have two coils that may need to go back to Whites. Especially since the 5.3 seems to be normal. If you know anyone handy that has the same coils or any that fit for that matter, I'd try them on your machine to see how they act and try yours on another machine for the same reason. Also, you might try setting your ground switch to lock before turning it on to test the coils. This sets a ground value that won't change as you try things and eliminates the detector's auto tracking from trying to lock on to any other adjustment. Of course I'm assuming you've double checked the connections, batteries etc. to make sure that all's as it should be, too.

If none of this works, you might try pulling the battery pack out while the machine is turned on for a minute or two and then replace it. This puts the machine into a hard reboot situation that sometimes straightens out problems. After all this if you still have problems it's probably time to call Whites.
Hope this is helpful,
BB

Did you check the ground to make sure there was no nearby metal? A metal. target that is large or close to the coil can cause and "overload" situation.

Did you perform a Ground Balance procedure to make sure your detector and coils were tuned for the conditions? A GB that is was off from the ground mineral requirement can also cause an "overload" condition.

I wouldn't say it is "normal" but it can happen if:

a.. The GB isn't established because these coils can see more ground signal than a smaller coil.
b.. You turn the MXT 'On' with the tracking toggle in the 'Lock' position
c.. You are over a metal target.
d.. You locate over some extreme ground.
e.. You have a faulty search coil.
f.. If you have a faulty detector.
g.. If you are located close to some bad EMI.

I suggest you contact a local White's deal and/or get with another MXT or M6 user and compare all of your coils on both detectors at the same time/location.

I have never had to reduce the Gain that low for any White's or Excelerator coil. The larger the coil the more ground it 'sees' and this can cause some issues, and bigger coils are usually more susceptible to EMI (Electromagnetic Interference), but 3

Thanks for the help guys I've checked all of the above suggestions I could " to no avail" I guess it's off to the doctor for my MXT & coils:stretcher:
The only problem is my service guy is 1000 miles away we don't have many Whites dealers in Australia

I sent the two suspect coils and my MXT in to be checked out. the detector check out fine, it turned out the coils were the problem. The guy's at goldsearch Aust:ausflag: replaced the coils and sent it all back in a week NO CHARGE.Thanks to all for the help:whites::thumbup:

cheers Ronnie

Dontcha love it when a problem becomes a smile!:clapping:
