HELLO ALL,
I AM NEW TO THE FORUM AND WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE COULD SEND ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
I JUST BOUGHT A USED EXCAL 800 AND WANT TO CHANGE THE COIL TO A LARGER ONE. DONT LIKE THE 8 INCH COIL AT ALL.
I MOSTLY HUNT CLEAN BEACHES. I'VE HAD A 15 INCH WOT BEFORE ON A SOVERIEGN BUT DONT WANT TO GO THAT BIG THIS TIME.
I JUST DONT KNOW WHERE TO GO FOR THE COIL OR WHO CAN INSTALL IT OR RE-WIRE IT.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE THE COILS QUICK CHANGE SO I CAN SWITCH THEM OUT ON A MOMENTS NOTICE?
I LIVE IN OLANDO AND KELLYCO CANT HELP ME.
I WOULD LIKE TO FIND SOMEONE IN MY AREA IF POSSIBLE. ANY HELP IS APPECIATED

THANK'S GUY'S

J.D.

Yes, you can add a normal coil connector with waterproof housing. I'd ask in the beach forum because many Excalibur users hang there. You can either hard wire the new coil or use a connector that's waterproof. I know there are several waterproof connectors available but don't know which one people prefer most. I'd say the most used coils on Excaliburs are either the 10" Minelab, S-12, WOT and SEF. If I had to guess the S-12 is probably the most used, but the SEF 12x10 and 15x12 are quickly gaining a following being new coils. Many also prefer the WOT. I don't blame you. I'm fixing a friend's Excalibur for him and that 8" BBS coil (which sure doesn't look 8", more like 7") is TINY. I told him if I was him I'd throw ANYTHING bigger on it, so long as it's at least 10". He's a fresh water beach hunter. Now I understand why many of you guys told me the "8" inch coils have very good separation. Thing looks like a hockey puck, though still not as tiny as my S-5.

I have the 10" on mine and won't be changing it till the warenty runs out at the earliest as it would be void if i put on an after market coil. Before you change coils decide how you hunt mostly, wet sand or water. The smaller the coil the easier it is to use in the water, less drag, lots prefer the 8" for this reason. If i do change the coil i think i would go no bigger than the SEF 12x10 as i prefer the etrac for the wet beach and mostly use the excal in the water, if you wet/dry beach only the Wot 15" seams to be the most popular although i prefer the 15x12 SEF.

The majority of the conectors will fail and either ruin the machine or coil cable making it useless, lately some newer conectors have been mentioned(look in beach/water forum) how they will survive only time will tell, i will hard wire if i do a change.

P.S. Apart from being hard on the old eyes, writing in Capitals is classed as shouting on most forums, no ofence intended just a FYI

If I was to use a waterproof connector I'd encase that connector in Shoe Goo for further insurance. You can always peal off the Shoe Goo down the road to swap coils. Remember too that while the WOT is probably the most used largest coil on the beach the 15x12 is still new. Another year or two and you might see the SEF coils out numbering the WOT.

I have a Coiltek water proof connector on one of my excal/WOT machines and have been hunting with it and the hardwired one for almost a year with no problems or any indication of it leaking. It was installed by a friend of mine who is an electronics guy so I think the key is to have it installed correctly and follow the directions when changing coils or general maintenance
