coil for CA, Sierra's?

Have vacationed in California's Sierra Nevada Mts. as long as I can remember. Usually take a detector but never owned one worth trying to prospect with. Plan on taking my new MXT on the next trip.
The past few years we've been camping at New Melonas Reservoir near Angels Camp.
Has anybody out there done any nugget shooting in that area? What's the ground like and what coil do you prefer?
