Coil distance from the ground...

it will always depend upon several variables, such as the detector in use, the various settings, the coil size and type being used, the ground mineralization and consistency (uniformity), and whether you are hunting with a fixed GB (factory preset, manually set, or a 'locked' selection) or with Autotrac working. Also to be considered is the anticipated depth of most targets at a given site. If they are too shallow, such as surface to maybe an inch or so, you can have difficulties from 'back-reading' and/or 'overloading.'
I was out for a while yesterday doing a little coil comparison and noting how the various coils will report the ground phase, respond to a located target at about 4", as well as produce a coin depth reading. Furtunately, even though windy, we had some great weather to get out and play, and I certainly had some 'toys' to play with! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
Take a day and dedicate it just to experimenting with your detector and coils to learn for yourself some of the differences. You might not have as many challenges, too, if you live in an area with mellower ground than I deal with.
Happy Hunting in 2005!

How does that 8 inch DD "prototype" compare in performance to the 8.5 widescan by Tesoro? What I mean is, does this one you're testing perform like a true DD when pinpointing, or more like the 6x9 DD by Whites?
One other thing. Who gave you permission to place those Killer Bee Wasp headphones on the dirt so they get all dirty ????
So much for resale value !!! Guess you'll have to keep them.

First, let me say that there wasn't s single speck of dirt on the Killer B's! <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D"> In a moment of weakness I very gently laid them down for the photo. I absolutely am impressed with my Killer B's and wouldn't do them any harm. I pamper all of my equipment!
Now, on the the 8" Double-D EXcelerator coil. You stated:
<STRONG>"How does that 8 inch DD "prototype" compare in performance to the 8.5 widescan by Tesoro?"</STRONG>... This is not easy to answer because we're considering a Tesoro widescan on an undefined Tesoro model. That gives me free reign to respond as I want. <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">
In the very mineralized environments I hunt in, I have not found a Tesoro to usually get the depth of detection on coin-size/button-size targets as a lot of the competitors models can. This is especially true of the earlier Tesoro models, such as my favorite 'original' Bandido and such. I especially liked their performance in dense iron trash, but they lacked depth.
I have found the Tej

Yesterday I had the time to work two sites where I wanted coverage, but good separation and depth ... all out of the same coil.
As I have said many, many times, even before the release of the EXcelerator coils, I found the 5.3 Eclipse coil to be the best-performing all purpose coil on the MXT! I still feel that way.
We all know that there are many hobbyists who are not going to opt for an accessory coil unless it is made by the detector manufacturer. It's just a fact we all are aware of, and certainly Kellyco knows it because they offer the manufacturer's coils as well as the Detech EXcelerator line.
If I was restricted to using ONLY White's coils, you'd very, very seldom see anything other than the 5.3 Eclipse at the end of my MXT. It gets very good depth, handles trash well, and does all you could ask of it.
Because I have multiple detectors in my arsenal, I don't have to rely on an MXT to do everything for me, and I don't either. But when I got my second MXT and then tried a 5" EXcelerator coil, I was sold. No, it doesn't get quite the depth of 5.3 Eclipse which is about 1

The 8" coil is absolutely perfect, or at least that's my opinion and it is shared by many. Ever since the DFX and especially the MXT were released, I have read of others who, like me, have wished White's would have made the MXT with an 8" coil instead, or at least offered one for it.
Now, the 8" EXclerator coil is NOT a super thin, amazingly lightweight 8" coil. But it is NOT a bad coil, either. Matter of fact, the 8" EXcelerator Double-D coil is just about IDEAL is size, shape, and 'feel.' It has the very good heavy-duty coil cable that helps eliminate some interference concerns, as well as wear-and-tear, or damage from some thorns and brush.
In the trashier sections where the stock 950 would give me fits because there were too many nearby trash (or good) targets that interfered with the performance using the MXT/950, the 8" DD coil called for less side-sweep in order to recover and go back over the target and still get a good 'hit.'
Also, I got a little better coverage when I moved out into the more open lawn areas than the 950 provided, but comparing signals on located targets, the 8" EXcelerator hit harder (louder or better) on the deeper coins than did the 950! This was a pleasant surprise! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
So, while I have my larger-than-stock coils for more coverage in open areas and hunting a little deeper for large targets (my 12

Monte,
Thanks for the photo's and your response. I guess I assumed you knew what I meant about TRUE DD. I thought I had mentioned in a prior "post" long ago that I was referring to the Minelab Sov when I say TRUE DD. You assumed correctly though about pinpointing and turning.
I also knew that you had not liked the Tesoro 8.5 widescan, and I wanted to see if you had "mentally" compared it to the Detech 8" DD.
As far as the 6x9, I was simply stating that for ME it is not a TRUE DD, and I was asking if the new 8" DD performs similar. You're correct though about comparing different models, as soon as VCO enters the arena it makes it hard to compare one make vs another than doesn't have VCO. Pinpointing becomes completely different.

You talk about pristine hunting conditions !!!
That's a great photo because you got everything in one shot at the RIGHT angle. The tree line, your truck, your MXT, and part of the lawn to the left. Hey wait a sec, do I see a fence over there to the left?? Did you JUMP that fence Monte?? That's not right !!
Don't you realize that if you were in Virginia they might start a new law and right a Bill prohibiting metal detectorists from jumping over fences in public view ??? That is a PUBLIC park isn't it?
Oh well. I hope you found something good before they close the park.

that would have pout me into a community garden area at the park , and this time of year that would mean weeding and preparing for planting and that = WORK!
No thanks, I was out to play!! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
This photo shows the grassy area where I did more of the "open lawn" comparison between the 950 concentric and 8" widescan coils.
This park, like most of them in the Portland metro area, provide hobbyists with a lot of lush green lawn area to coin hunt.
Even though we're "way up north" to some forum regulars, this area on the coastal side of the Cascade Mountains, between the Coast Range and Cascades, stays pretty nice most of the year. We might get wet on occasion, but .... I have <EM>never</EM> had to shovel rain, and it sure makes for green lawns and easy recovery.
Hope you're able to get out and enjoy.

Stick with that camera whatever brand it is. The only problem I have with this picture is I can't find the hole.
It is a par 3 right? Is the flag to the right at 4 o'clock?
What do you find at this spot? I will guess metal tee's and chewing gum foil mostly. Some coins here and there of course.
Thanks for a view into YOUR world, maybe I should take a pic of my world and show you. <img src="/metal/html/sad.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":sad">

Monte,
I appreciate you willingness to share your opinions and findings when checking out new products.
As usual, a fine objective report.

Does anybody happens to know Can I buy EXclerator Detech coils in Europe?
Thanks

Yuliy,I do not know where you can get these coils in europe but Kellyco does international sales via UPS.Call at 1-407-699-8700 or e-mail at:international@kellycodetectors.com

Hmm
I got an answer from Kellyco, they say
