coil depth ?

I had trouble pinpointing with my 10.5 standard coil with the Explorer II. I got the 8 inch Minelab coil and it works VERY good.

I put in a coin program, I have the sensitivity set at 20 and cut out pop tabs and it is really great.

My questions are, what is the normal depth for these two coils? How much difference is there in depth when using my installed program with these 2 coils?

I can honestly say that with the standard coil and factory settings I did unearth a Spanish real after a major rainstorm. The ground was quite moist down that deep. The coin was at just about 20 inches. Of course that may have been just my dumb luck.

Any comments either pro or con about this subject will be most appreciated

Here in S.E Penna, I can say that my average coin / trash depth is 8 - 10" depending on soil matrix and moisture content. I have some sites (farm) where I have recovered coins / buttons at 12", larger artifacts deeper. At the beach in NJ I have hit on coins at 18". This is with stock coil. I recently got a Sunray X-5, I have had limited use due to newness and have hit on targets 6 - 8" with no problem.

Thank you for the reply, it is appreciated.

Hi Boobie. I have four coils for my Explorer, 5" 8" 10.5" and 18'. All have their place and I have been successful using them all. That being said I think the best is the factory 10.5" I have no problem pinpointing with it. I will be up your way in a month or so for some diggin and I will let you know so we can get together. I will help you out on your pinpointing and anything else you want to know. As far as depth goes you will get many different answers from people. It all depends on the type soil you are diggin. Most depth people claim are exagerated but the Explorers are the deepest machines out there. My experiences with different coils are this. Compared with the stock 10.5 you can expect around a 2 inch loss using the 8 inch, a 4 inch loss with the 5 inch and a 2 inch gain using the 18 inch. The 8 inch is a little better in trashy areas than the 10.5. Again these are my personal findings and the next persons comparisons will probably be different. Hope this helps. See you soon.
