COIL COVERS

Are coil covers considered a must have item for a detector? Since the detectors coil is mostly off the ground anyway, Does the coil get that dirty or banged up?

Yes it does. I never had coil covers and my coils show the wear and tear. Also helps when selling your machine. And as for never touching the ground? Don't count on it.

Davlin617,

No, a coil cover is not a must have item (for some people), in as much as the coil will work fine without one.

Almost all coils need to be as close to the ground as possible for the best performance (closer to the objects in the ground), this being the case they do get dirty and banged up, and will eventually wear through the coil housing.

With the cost of coils being in the $100(used) and up category:yikes:, and a coil cover being $10 or less:super:, it is a must have item for me:thumbup:, you will have to decide for yourself if it is a must have item for you.

I see this come up fairly often. While they are not a MUST HAVE item, most users and the manufacturers say they don't affect performance with the exception if they get filled with black sand or some other mineralization. So it behooves the user to clean them out once in a while. Personally, I use and like them and am in the crowd that would rather replace a cover than a coil. Some will say they arent' necessary as one doesn't need to scrub the coil literally on the ground as some of the earlier machines required. However, the closer to the ground the coil runs, the deeper it detects, period - so I use them. My two bits.
