Coil covers

Just wondering how many people use coil covers? I detected for years on land and in the water and never used a coil cover and never had any problems. But I am considering getting one for the CZ-21 I ordered. What are the pro's and con's?

I think its just another way for the Manufacturer to hit you for a few more bucks. I've never wore a coil out.......... K

If you're going into the water or working the wet sand, which I assume you'll be doing otherwise why buy a CZ-21, you'll want to protect the coil. You abrade the coil when you are skimming the sand, basically you are constantly rubbing the coil on sandpaper and you will wear right through the coil. A lot of the surf pirates use marine epoxy to coat their coil but if you go with the coil cover you should seal it really well with an RV sealant to keep sand from accumulating inside the cover. Sand will throw your detector off and cause falsing at worse and reduced sensitivity at best. Alternatively, you can just keep rinsing out the cover but this becomes a hassle very quickly.

I HAVE SEEN HOLES IN COILS FROM WEAR!! HOT SAND WITH FREQUENT USE WILL DO IT!!...YOU CAN EPOXY THE COIL TOO ASK "GRAVE DIGGER" "VA BEACH PIRATE" HOW!!

Hi BH: Christmas in Bermuda is one of the Best kept secrets. The island is peaceful and calm as many have headed to the mainland for the holidays. The weather is typically Bermudaful, mid 70's and sunny during the day, nice and cool in the mid 60's at night. Low season rates apply so you can get a good deal before the rainy season arrives in January.

Think About It,

Back when I was relic hunting I wore through the coil of a Tesoro Bandido once. I think it depends on the kind of hunting you're doing and whether you're scrubbing the coil on the ground. Actually, I think that the sand on saltwater beaches, either in or out of the water could be hard on a coil if you scrubbed it on the surface enough but I seriously doubt that anyone does that. I don't. But I still keep a cover on my coil. A little insurance doesn't hurt, imo, keeping in mind what others have said before about erratic signals and making sure you don't have salt water/sand between the cover and the coil.
n/t
SAND AND WATER DON'T BOTHER MY DETECTOR...PLUS I SEAL IT....I WILL BE PUTTING EPOXY ON THE SUPER 12 WHEN ITS OLDER BUT THE COIL COVER IS VERY GOOD KEEPS OUT MOST SAND

on the beach, i am not using NO COVER

As u know i expoxy all mine.......................if u do not, the minelab coils come about at the edges

put on one coat and then a few days later or anytime add one more coat...................check it out from time to time, u can see when u need to add another coat, that is the good part of the epoxy

coil cover with sand and water added makes the damn rig somewhat heavier also.

I BURN THROUGH 2 COIL COVERS A YEAR OR MORE!! I FOUND THE SCRUBBING GIVES ME BETTER RESULTS...BETTER GETTING DEEP FAINT TARGETS.. HOPE TO SEE YOU IN FEBUARY!!!

Does the epoxy or a coil cover change the performance of a coil since there is more material for the signal to go through?

pdunc, I use a coil cover on the Excal. I scrape the coil across the bottom, as I cannot see the coil, because the water here is zero visibility and I do it for coil control. Epoxy will not hold up for me, without constant reapplication. I absolutely SHREAD a coil cover about once a quarter. Keep about 3 on hand. I wash it out maybe once during a hunt and ALWAYS, after getting home. No worries. I like it. I have ordered 2 coil covers for my CZ21 too, as I expect it will be the same deal. Never have actually tried Max's Loctite, but another brand, perhaps I am missing the boat, but I can't imagine that expoxy is as durable as hard plastic. If you do run unprotected, either by epoxy or coil cover, you WILL wear out a coil in the surf, in about 2 weeks, I did it once. Never again!

Thanks everyone. GraveDigger had a good point about warranties. I guess that I will use a coil cover and possibly try to seal it with silicone sealant to try keep the sand and water out, at least until the warranty runs out. And GulfHunter, good luck with your new CZ-21. Please give us a full report on it as soon as you can.
