Coil Covers ..............

Elton

New member
To use, or not use a cover !!

I would highly suggest a coil cover.. Coils are expensive..Covers are cheap.

Many do not like covers for one reason or another..that is a choice call..

Unless you want to replace a $150 coil then get a cover..... It seems at first your not wearing out the coil, but in fact every time you take out the detector you are in fact putting wear and tear on the coil bottom and sometimes the sides.

Another good point is resale value..picture up the bottom of a coil that has been covered..and then one that has not been covered..see which coil sells faster and which one gets a higher sell price..

Sometimes it is better to spend a little extra, and save a lot down the road.

Your call......Just saying I have learned in 30 + years a cover is the way to go.....

For my 5"DD coil....which gets alot of scrubbing action in dirt and rocks.....definitely have a coil cover. Little bugger is expensive:)

Depends on the coil.----Some of the larger coils are a pain in the butt with coil covers on for several reasons--mineralized sand/dirt getting between coil & coil cover--added weight---some of the suckers being HARD (near impossible) to get off for cleaning---poor fit on the coils, etc.----I still use coil covers on (some) of my larger coils but certainly not all of them due to the reasons stated.-----I doubt the average person would ever wear out the bottom of the coil (except in extreme circumstances).-------Small coils--a different situation--I use coil covers on ALL my small coils.---------Del

Hey Elton, I'm yea on some, and nay on others.Depends on weight and how hard they are to take off to clean on the bigger ones, and the small ones pretty much the same except the weight is not so much a factor on them. My hunting hardly ever involves any rocky terrain, and to me the weight factor is a big deal. You would be surprized at the comfort it can add to your swing, when some covers are shucked. If I ever wear a coil out for lack of a cover I feel having shed the weight will well be worth the price of a new one, HH, Charlie

I do not use coil covers! I have found them to be more trouble then the un-likely possibility of having to replace a coil. I had a little over 3500 hours on a regular F 75, mostly on the 11" DD coil, and had no dings or noticeable scratches on it. I don't want the added weight, find I am more apt to damage the coil from trying to remove them then from normal wear without one, and no matter how tight they fit, they still collect, dirt, sand, water and grim.....HH jim tn

Based on my Rocky , and Sandy Great Lakes areas of soil.... The covers work like they should.............I see from the heavy hitters they may be more of an issue than a coil saver in many areas.

Duuuuuuuuuuuuu..guess I should have thought of that myself.. [attachment 221305 lol.gif]

Take it off, PUT your name and phone inside. IF it ever gets stolen, you have proof. AND you can call the company and if they EVER get it in for repair, THEY just might contact you if you told them it was stolen when it happened

Elton, I would say your terrain gives you the perfect reason why covers would be worth the trouble to use and maintain. They would surely give you that extra bit of buffer for those times you know you will be in amongst the rocks.HH,Charlie

I just failed to reason out all the reasons someone would not like, and or use a coil cover.........

I was just thinking of why I use them...

I tried the spray on bed liner on all the coils for my AT-Pro. Like it a whole lot better then the coil covers that were sand magnets on them. The coil covers on my two E-Trac coils just don't seem to collect much sand so, for now, I'm living with them.

I'm really not in rocks much here, more sand and dirt. I guess it would be more important for me if I was hunting in rocks and gravel.

elton! the true likelihood of "average" soils wearing thru the bottom
of a coil over time is really "negligible" IF i was hunting "all" the time over
"gravel" roads, then a cover might be useful to keeping wear at a minimum,
however,in my view, just about every where else, they are not necessary,EXCEPT,
of course,if one wants to keep the bottom of the coil looking "new",so the detector will have more appeal
if ya need,or want to sell it!..just sayin'

(h.h.!)

Well as I have stated, THIEVES want to sell your stuff. Serial numbers get taken off. What thief would know you have engraved the inside of the cover with your information? Absolutely NONE, lol , unless they come here and read. My machines both have covers and my information is inside. IF my Fishers ever get stolen and they get sold and somewhere go in for repair, I am hoping that if I notify First Texas they will be able to find my machine. Or if the police find it and the serial number is gone, that would be the way to prove its yours.

Personally, I find coil covers to be a pain and they come off of my coils as soon as the manufactures warranty expires. :detecting: I run all Minelab Machines (FBS and BBS) and their performance noticeably suffers when sand or soil is trapped under the coil cover (Which happens a lot).

I'll admit I have not been detecting very long (Just under 3 years now), but I have never seen an epoxy filled coil that was actually worn down on the bottom to where it was no longer usable. I'm sure with enough use it happens, but my guess is that the cable or mounting tabs would fail on most long before the bottom ever did.

I agree with Elton, I always use coil covers their not expensive. I would never by a detector with scratches on the coil as the same as the control box. You never know when the latest and greatest detector comes out and I would want top dollar for my trade in or to sell.

I'm with Elton, I use covers and I do remove and clean them from time to time. Like many things though - you pays your money and you make your choice. If you don't lik'em don't use'em.
