Coil covers

Do you really need coils covers for Whites coils? Has any body ever wore one of their coils out by using it with out a cover? Do they get better depth without them? I have the DD coils and once the covers are in place you can't get them off to clean out the dirt that accumulates between them. Opinions needed.

Covers a NO for the beach. You could place a small amount of silicon around the edge. Also if it's hit on a rock or sharp stick could ruin the coil. HH

I don't use them anymore. Many years ago I originally bought into the idea, but realized later that it would be near impossible, or negligent, to ruin a coil by searching with it. You should get about 1/16" better depth without one (the thickness of the cover).

I do use them now for whatever reason. I put 25 years on my first coil without a cover and never had any problem.

than 6" in diameter.
Why? Because...
► the smallest coils are the ones that I am going to work into the tightest places with the sharpest possible contacts.
► on smaller coils you do not suffer from added weight fatigue and coil control.
► almost every manufacturer instructs, in the Operator's Manual, that you should search with the coils about

I will sometimes use a coil cover if I am just doing a coil evaluation, such as a new coil I might be testing, or if I am checking out someone elses coil and they think they have a problem with it. On my personal coils, nothing over 6" in diameter needs or gets a coil cover. I don't scrub a coil, partly because you shouldn't in many ground mineral environments with today's detectors, so I am therefore not abusive to a coil and have never, in these past 40 years, worn a coil out.

by not protecting it with a $9.00 cover????
I use covers on all my coils and silicone each one on. Then I never have to worry about getting dirt in them and I can always remove it if absolutely necessary.
