Coil Covers - Are they a good idea overall ?

Spoke to a few individuals regarding coil covers. Some are for the idea ; some are against. Of course they protect the coil from wear against the ground surface over time. Was wondering could they adversely effect coil performance in any manner. Also, what about performance once some covers became saturated due to wet grass, moist soil, ground cover etc. Appreciate some feedback. E J

The big question is anyone every wore a coil thru....Pluss features...coil cover is cheap most coils are not and of course if you decide to upgrade it keeps your coil clean for resale value.
Minus no matter how tight they fit get dirt and debris under the coil which may affect the coils performance..
I personally like coil covers but do clean them out and the other guy may have an opposite opinion....your call..

PS: imagine at least a 100 percent profit on thin pieces of plastic considering some larger ones are now approaching 20 bucks and certainly one size does not fit all and even different runs may be a tad different...so go to a dealer and try one on before you buy.....

I have to agree with Dan that you need to clean them often or your performance WILL be affected. If you hunt in sand and gravel, I'd would recommend one, other than that, no, more bother than it's worth, plus they add weight.

This comes up fairly often on the forums I haunt. I've never seen any proof that they harm performance per se, but if moisture, mineralized sand etc. gets trapped between the cover and coil it's another story. They should be removed and cleaned from time to time. Personally, I believe in keeping the coil as close to the ground as possible in order to get that last bit of depth and prefer the protection of a cover. As mentioned earlier, if nothing else, it keeps the coil looking good. As to wearing through a coil, I've seen several instances plus a nasty gash clear through from a sharp stone and extreme wear from sandy beaches. In the final analysis, I'm a big believer in IF YOU LIKE IT USE IT regardless of whether others do. I like covers and use them.

Guess this is one of them to each their own preference.
I have never used a coil cover and used my last detector over 2 years before I got my mxt and I used it every where and the day I sold it the coil had very little if any wear on the bottom of it.
Now when I'm hunting gravel parking lots I don't scrub the ground I am very careful about that but in grass areas I just let her glide along the ground and no problems with any coils so far but I will say if most of my hunting was going to be rough areas I would probably consider getting covers.

They add unneeded weight to the coil, and will cause a problems at some point, if you hunt enough. They can be securely sealed and siliconed onto the coil. I prefer not to glue anything to the coil, so I carry some loose ones in my bag and install them if I am hunting rocky terrain, otherwise no coil cover, and never in the water. Should you ever develop a wear problem you can always add a coil cover at that time.
