Coil covers are REQUIRED on Xcals

Ive sent a couple of messages to ML reference my coil cover that has split down the side after about 4 months. My main concern was if i dont replace the cover how would i stand on my warranty if i didnt get a new one. Obviously the coil will soon go the same way as the cover. They said epoxy was ok.... now im not certain even thats ok. Since it could be classified as an alteration. Heres the reply i got:

Hi Dew, the coil cover is there to protect the coil, so operating the detector without it would in fact void the warranty. It would fall under section 4.4 on your warranty registration card.

4.4 does not cover damage caused by accident, misuse, negligent act or omission, alteration, modifications or unauthorized service by the Purchaser or any other party;

Take a good look at 4.4..... i can make about any damage fall within that meaning they fix one at their own discretion. Im not certain how good my extended warranty is now. I might just as well modify the heck out of it and call it a day.

i dont how did you break ur coil cover in 4 months ?? i c guys on the beach using their coils to move sand ,rocks and all kind of thing out of their way or bumping it on stuff to get the sand of it ....not recomended

Ive been asking ML that very same question. I guess it must me because it couldnt be their thin cover. I got a chuckle when i was told to hold the coil higher off the sand. I wanted to ask if he'd ever used a detector. Surely he knows MLs dont like a lot of gap and you loose more depth than you think swingging it 3 inches above the sand. Over 90 percent of my hunting is in the water..... not rock a little shelly occassionally but mostly sand. Here is a picture of it.

i dont use cover , i'm a epoxy guy and i already gave away my cover to guy at this forum i dont think they are all like yours i think u just got a bad one

I emailed ML today and was told the same thing. The comment I got for epoxy on the coil itself was that it would "definitely void the warranty" and "use the provided cover, that's why we provide it"...

I'd always worry about the extended warranty (which is why I don't buy them on cars) and I don't trust them.

I guess I'll have to find someone with a good deal on the covers until my warranty expires. Then... well... I'm a modder/hacker and always have been... Waiting for a warranty to expire is worse than death sometimes...

Good luck and HH!

Dew send that picture of the seperated coil cover to ML. I've had the same one forever and have never had a cover do that. They should replace that cover. May be a bad polymer mix or something. You can not abuse or misuse a cover and that happen( IMO). I think when ML sees that cover they will send you a new one. Hope so. Keep us informed. HH :minelab:

That looks like the cover split at the seam. I would ask ML to replace it under warranty since it appears to be a defective cover.

hershey..... im not new to detecting, almost 20 years and have never had one seperate even in the worst conditions. I shot off another Email with a photo. I guess we will see how service oriented they are. Badgard did you get a name about the epoxy voiding warranty? My CSR has been Brian so someone is out to lunch.

They used to charge extra for the coil covers, did they mention that to you:)
Kinda puts a different spin on "thats why we provide it".
Im sure its there to protect the coil, but new or old I dont use em anymore.

You can't really expect Minelab to warranty the outer coil cover. That would be considered a consumable item. You are obviously what would be considered a "heavy user" of your equipment. I'm sure you have found enough with your Excalibur to pay for a few extra coil covers.

I put Amazing Goop on my coil cover to keep it from wearing out. You can buy it at hardware stores under various names such as "Amazing Plumbers Goop", "Amazing Household Goop", and "Amazing RV Goop". The stuff is tougher than the coil cover itself.

let us know when u email the pic i will send them an email asking to replace ur cover if few of us at this forum send emails they wii get the masssage

Love love love my Goldmaster headphones. While you are at it, tell Minelab their yellow headphones stink!!

i just got a second excal (older one ,800) and it has yellow headphones , will have to move the battery end cap to the new excal so i can use the mr.g's headphones (if u type in the whone mr. g.. name it will get bleept for some reson)

I got tired of cleaning the sand from between the coil and cover, so I went to Walmart and purchased a can of spray on pickup bed liner coating. I sanded the bottom of the coil with 80grit sand paper just enough to rough it up so the bed liner spay would stick,(just coat the bottom of the coil) This stuff is tough, after two seasons of hunting the Gulf it is still holding up well. My Excal is well out of warranty.

Problem solved...... ML comes thru with a new cover so now ill have to decide how i want to upgrade the new one. I think the picture may have said a thousand words. If not..... i just appreciate this.

Thanks for posting Dew. Glad ML took care of your problem. I have had two problems over the years and Minelabs service was great. Hopefully you will be good to go and make some GOLD pictures. HH :minelab:

Well Dew, I wish I had followed through like you with ML..As I told you, mine split exactly in the same place as yours did after 6 months of use..I went and paid for another through the dealer and it cost me $17 for that flimsy piece of crap, that probably cost .68 to make in China...
I repaired the split one with $5 worth of epoxy from the hardware store, but the point is that I already spent the unnecessary $17 :(
