What I worried about was chipping of the epoxy. I have heard of one or two
people that cracked the epoxy enough to expose the wires inside.
That could contaminate the coil with dirt, moisture, etc.
That could effect performance if that happened.
I kinda think like one said.. Cheap insurance from damage.
I use a cover on all three coils. And to me, the 9x12 is the one
that really needs it the most as far as potential areas to be cracked
or chipped. But I also use one on the stock and sniper coil.
I bought a cover for the sniper when I bought the coil.
After I got the coil, I found that the sniper pretty much has a cover
built on, and doesn't really need and extra one. But I slapped it on
anyway for double insurance. The extra weight doesn't bother me any.
Probably cuz I've had them since day one, and am used to them.
I've never really had any real problems with dirt and falsing, etc..
I'll take em off every once in a while and clean everything.
I've had my 250 over three years, and with an average amount of use,
my coils still look like brand new if I pull the covers off. Still have that
glassy shiny look on the bottoms.
Also, with a cover I'm not paranoid about scruffing down close to the
ground as I would be with no cover. With the cover, I can drag the
ground if I want to and not damage the coil. I usually pinpoint with the
coil real near, or even touching the ground for the best accuracy
as an example.
Not only do I use a coil cover, I keep a rain cover on the control head all
the time too.. Keeps rain off of course, but for me, it's more to keep
my dirty mitts from punching dirt into the buttons.. Pinpoint button especially.
Extends the life of them if you keep the dirt out.
Also protects from scratches if it get knocked over, jammed against stuff
in the trunk, etc..
Anyway.. It's up to you.. I wouldn't bother getting a sniper coil cover.
It's not needed. Only the stock coil and the 9x12 do I worry about
possible chipping and cracking.
The stuff is pretty tuff, but like the bumper sticker says, @#$% happens..
