coil cover-----your thoughts?

About a year ago I got a SunRay FZ-12 coil with a cover. The cover wasn't very tight and had a lot of openings along the edges, so best I could I covered the openings with RTV. Eventually a couple areas got pin hole openings allowing salt water in. Some water would drip out after use. Probably being a little over worried about it,I removed the cover. It didn't look bad. Some salt and microscopic sand, and hardly any water. Anyway I think I still want to use the cover to protect the coil (Or is this a debatable point? Being I hunt just on dry and wet sand, and some foot shallow surf, is a cover really necessary\desirable?). This time instead of trying to fill the open edges from the top down, how would it work filling it from the bottom up? I'm thinking of applying a liberal amount of RTV to the inside bottom of the cover first, then insert the coil and let the RTV ooze out from the edges (it can be pre-taped to minimize cleanup; also RTV wipes off easy with a damp rag). This should help ensure a good seal. Has anyone tried this? What are your thoughts? Thanks

Would a new cover possibly fit better? I hunted for 25 + years and never used a cover until I got one with my cz3d two or so years ago. Although I never had to replace a coil, I am a "scrubber" and the cover thus is a cheap investment for saving the coil from nicks and scratches. My thoughts, anyway. HH jim tn

I have used a .98 cent Frisbee strapped to coil with plastic ties. allows water to circulate around covered coil and will push nicely across the sand , rocks whatever and protect coil very well. love those plastic straps. I put holes in side of Frisbee for ties to slip Thu to hold it one.

Thanks to woppy63 for a little good old American know how,I have a frisbee gathering dust and you just gave me the perfect use for it!!
