???Coil Cover (seal or not?)

peg leg red

New member
Just got a used ,, but very nice Elite with a t10 coil and am wondering if I should seal the coil ????? I mostly hunt beaches 90% of the time (but some inland too) and when I took the cover off I had lots of sand in it. Should I seal it or not?? And if so with what?? I am new with Sovs. and all advice is appreciated. When I am ready to move up with beach hunting which coil is better (WOT or S12, or other ?? ) My S10 seems heavy with hip mounted and on s-rod ,, I am used to 1280x hip mounted with 8" coil..

Hi Peg Leg,#1- If you want the easy way you can just put a bead of silicone sealer between the coil and cover or what many are doing including me is to throw out the cover and use Loctite marine epoxy and brush it on the coil.#2-Buy a Straight shaft! All detectors feel right that way.I always chest mount my Sovereign so it is even Lighter.Try to locate a Sunray leather bag since it has a coil relief on it.As far as coils go. I only beach hunt so I use a Sunray 12" Intruder and 15" Wot coil, with the Wot being my Favorite. The Sunray is lighter and easier to swing but the Wot gives more coverage and goes Deeper but it is heavier. They are both Great coils. Good Luck! Walter

Thanks Guys... I think I will go with the silicone .. Saw one of gravediggermax,s post back.. He builds his own straight shafts out of fiberglass rake haandles ??? Looks like a good set up...

u plan on just hunting the damp and dry and waters edge

rake is tuff and works great in the big waves.............i use it like a crutch.............rake goes all the way to coil itself.....lower rod slides up inside so it is strong

B U T

KINDA HEAVEY FOR JUST NORMAL SWINGING, BUY STRAIGHT SHAFT OF BUY ALUM. BOAT RAIL FROM MARINE STORE AND MAKE YOUR OWN

the package has changed now more bluer - same stuff

Max,, Thanks I will try that,, Does the lower part of the shaft slide up in the boat rail or will I have to modify the bottom of rail to fit coil?? What about Handle and Cuff can I use the cuff that is on the s-rod ?? Did you make handle or buy..or use connectors from marine store??
I have about 2 1/2 sets of used-up battery time 'in' on this elite and am getting used to tones (some what) but have a ways to go.. hard part is slowing down,, SOOOO much beach and so little low tide time..
Something i have been thinking about,, have you seen the short crutches, and walking aids with cuffs , and could they be modified? Buy used of course...
Thanks, and as always your tips are always welcome!!!!, And All others that take the time to help a "GREENIE"...(Appreciated)....
I'm gonna'learn Sov talk and this hobby before I get to old to hunt.........I hope ..Peg leg red

Check back about a month or so in the posts for a nice crutch modification. Sorry, but I can't recall the poster of this mod but it was a little over a month ago.

Hello Gary,

What I would say, I am sorry you are having problems and I will help
you
solve them. To solve you problem is one remove the zip ties, and take
the coil cover off and clean the inside the coil cover and the bottom
of
the coil. Step two, Get some clear silicone (rubber) and put about 4 to
5 small dabs on the inside of the coil cover and put it up on the coil,
than where the coil cover and the coil meet each other take the
silicone
all around so it is completely sealed, so no fine particles of ferrous
materials can set off your machine. If you are having some problems
understanding what I am explaining to you, you can call me at
1-888-517-2066 ext 21.
