Coil Cover Question

I've been contemplating permanently attaching my 17" coil cover to my coil by filling it with clear silicon caulk and then pressing it back on and wiping off the excess. Anyone ever do this and are there any drawbacks? I find myself cleaning my coil every hunt with the fine ,wet, salt sand that filters in and this can cause some real falseing.. Seems like the silicon would work perfectly.

I never did but if I did I'd do it so I could change covers of it got wore out.

I've never filled my coil covers with silicon. But I do run a bead around all the edges, where the coil cover meets the coil. It seals out the dirt, sand and water. And still allows me to "peel it off" if I ever need to replace the cover. JMHO HH Randy

I have had issues with the coil cover since day one. I had asked Minelab if it was just mine or is every 3030's cover poorly attached. The answer was the skit plate is for scuffing purpose only, to prevent damage from a sharp object. Not to keep sand out! I did find over the last two years is that the sand goes out just as easily as it s got in. I hunt wet sand water so on the downward stroll each time the water washes most of the sand back out. Only hunting in dry sand does it get to be a pain.

I tossed my coil cover and dipped my coil in that bright yellow rubber seal they sell for putting on plier handles. It lasts quite awhile, then If it starts wearing I just redip it. It's about the same weight as the coil.

That is a good idea, pour the dip in a pan and dip the coil. :)

Before I even started using the ctx, I had heard of junk getting in the coil cover. I did searches in different ways to find out what to do about it. Many people had some good ideas, many were obviously not very good. But, for every good sounding idea, there were people who had a problem with that idea, or at least a possible problem. I decided to leave the coil cover alone. I don't hunt in sandy areas though. The most I get is a little grit and dust in the cover.

I did read about people completely sealing the cover with silicone, and others stating why this wasn't good. It was a while ago but I believe someone mentioned that no matter what, some part of the cover would start to come lose and junk would get inside. Then, with the rest of the cover being glued with silicone, you had a devil of a time getting the junk out.

I also wondered if silicone itself might cause a little falseing, but never did find an answer to that.

I did that with my Excalibur 1000.....worked like a charm.

I might also add that when I was looking into ways to prevent junk from building up in, or on the coil cover, I also wondered about any impurities in any sealant or coating I might use. There are always impurities in these materials and I wondered if they might degrade the performance of the detector. I couldn't find any information on that either.
