coil cover or not

I'm wondering how important a coil cover is to protect the coil on a metal detector. Coils cost quite a bit to replace but I don't think anybody I've seen detecting had a cover to protect the coil. How many years of detecting can you get out of a coil on various surfaces {grass, dirt, gravel} without a cover, before it's dead. From the way they look it seems like it would take a lot of use to damage one. What percentage of people use them? I'm thinkin not to many. Thanks for opinions.

Depends on what kind of surfaces you mostly detect over. I've been doing this for 42 years without a coil cover.

I have never NOT used a coil cover. I agree it seems a motto point sometimes. But, put your detector up for sale - the first question? "Did you use a coil cover?"
For the few bucks, get one.

I have a coil cover for newer ace-250 and it helps when you pinpoint alot because when you pinpoint you usually have to put it on the ground. So I would say for nine to fifth-teen bucks yes.

I use it when I'm in a rough area...lots of stones or at night. I'd say 95% of the time I do not use it.

Pro's:

Protects your coil....big bucks
adds hardly any extra weight

Con's:

traps stuff in the cover(sand / dirt)especially when its raining which means a little extra maintenance / cleaning
