Coil comparison questions.

Hi,

I have been detecting for quite a few years now with many different detectors. My question is what are some of the pros and cons of eliptical coils? I usually use double d coils and on some detectors still use the concentric coils but have never used and eliptical. I noticed a lot of gold detectors use them but what advantage does a good coin detector have using them. I use a minelab explorer xs now and will be getting an eagle spectrum as a backup. I have seen the 10x12 coils for the explorer and was wondering what to expect from it compared to the 10.5"

Thanks,
Travis Quinn

It's my understanding that Elliptical coils are just DD coils in the elliptical shape. That said, the shape is often helpful in getting into tighter places and the detecting field is somewhat longer and narrower which gives good coverage for the size and usually handles moderately trashy areas better due to the pattern. Supposedly elliptical coils handle mineralization better than concentrics, but I think that's true whether elliptical or round.

The 12x10 squeezes the left/right width of the detection line so it's more laser like for separation between targets, yet still gets the depth of a 12" coil. I've used no other coil like it and am very impressed. Since the field is less "fuzzy" or sloppy compared to a lot of round DD coils, it also "sees" less ground and thus runs smoother over mineralized ground and such, allowing higher sensitivity settings. It's soaking in less "ground stew", so to speak. But don't let that make you think that it doesn't get the same coverage as a 12" round coil. Remember that there is still a line going from the tip to the tail of the coil, so as you sweep left and right you are still covering a 12" patch of ground.
