Coil choices

I'm fairly new to the MXT Pro but I was wondering if the D2 coil was needed/recommended. The coils I currently have are a 6x10DD and the stock 12" coil that came with it. I will be getting a 5.3 when money allows after reading all the talk about it. Just a bit unsure on the differences between the coils I have and the D2 coil. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Lucky,You have the best ones now, I have used the MXT for about 8years now and the one i use the most is the little 5.3 that is the best for parks. If you hunt in big open fields you wont do much better than the 9.5 that will go about as deep as you will want to dig. The 6X10 is very good also, so if you use the ones you have and still want the other it will still be there. Good luck Dean

The D2 seems to very well thought of, but so is the 6X10. In my own experience I find I have more use and success with the smaller coils. I'm sure you'll like the 5.3.

You have the big deep 12" and the all around 6x10 and once you get the 5.3, you have everything covered pretty well. Unless you like playing with alot of coils, you sound like you'll be all set with the trio.

I'm finding out I am not a huge fan of changing out coils, just trying to cover all my bases :bouncy: I am going to test out the 12" this afternoon on a couple ballparks close to the house. I appreciate all the info!

That;s the main reason I have the 6X10 on my MXT most of the time. It gives good coverage, good separation in most trashy areas and adequate depth. Once in a while I hunt where I can make good use of a larger coil and fairly often I drop to a smaller to deal with heavy trash, but 80% of the time the 6X10 works great for me.

Tried out the 12" coil and I can't say I was really impressed with it. Pinpointing was a pain, seperation in the trashy areas was almost impossible and it was ALOT heavier than the 6x10. Guess I will get that 5.3 and keep the 12" for the beach maybe. I did manage to find a fairly deep quarter at about 8 inches with it but after putting it back and re-setting the plug I checked with the 6x10 and it hit almost as hard and ID'd the same. I guess the 5.3 is the last coil I will need to buy for a while. Just my thoughts on the matter. I appreciate the info and I am off to hunt an 1800's farm house on some private property today, hopefully I can post some finds this afternoon/evening :smoke:

I just wish you could get a detector without a coil and make your coil choices when you buy it.

Good luck on your hunt and it sounds like you have a good solid plan on what coil you need . The bigger coils seem to do best in open none trashy area's .
