Coil choice ?

I have the older MXT and would like to get a smaller coil for it.
Which one would be suggested ,
The Eclipse 5.3 or the sef 8x6 coil ?
Price wise there the same but sef a little larger.
I've read on the sef in the past post and seem to gravitate to it.

There are a lot of guys really like the little Eclipse but I really did not care for it. One thing is the shape. It does not have a flat bottom which is no big deal but always annoyed me for some reason. The other thing was I did not get much depth out of it. I have a 7" and a 10" dime buried in the yard. The Eclipse will barely hit it from one side and you have to really scrub the ground to get that hit.

I also have the 6x8 sef and it will hit the 10" dime from two sides and sometimes from all four. Rarely but it can at times. A 9" dime is a no bringer dig signal.
The 6x8 will cover a little more ground and separate better.

My vote is to get the 8x6 sef, I have a detecting buddy that bought one two months ago and he likes it so well its not been off his m6 since then. I like it, I tested his for about an hr, its better than the 5.3 eclipse, covers more ground, yet light enough. I plan on buying one in the next couple months for my mxt. I also have a tiny 5" excelerator detech I really like for tot lot hunting, very sensitive, to about 7", not the best for dirt hunting as no coverage.

I have the 8x6 it is a real nice coil and well reviewed here. Easy to pinpoint. Light enough and rugged. Good seperation and deep. That is the one I would get. The 5.3 is a good coil but the shape thing is off putting. I tried a larger SEF and wasn't that impressed but that was me.

Ordered the sef coil from kellyco one of the forum sponsers.
Thanks for the info, will look forward to spring now.
Will report on it in the future use.

Hey Joel,
I'm the buddy. If you have read any of my post's you would know I would fight to the death if you tried to take my 5.3 away from me.
But after using this 8x6, I am just totally amazed at that coil. You will love it. It is the perfect match for the MXT / M6.

While you are waiting for it to come, You better start thinking about a good shovel to dig with.
Good Luck ,

An after thought.
About a month before I got the 6x8 I bought a 6" excel. and the second day out I hit a nice 14K gold chain (5.5 grams) at 5".
These Detech coils are hot.

The SEF8x6 coil is in my mind one of the best coil ever made,i use one on my DFX and not only does it cover more ground than the 5.3 coil its much deeper and deadlt on small items,it also pinpoints very good.

You will be very pleased with it,i also reckon with the slightly thicker cable you dont get as much EMI as alot of other coils.

I've been looking at this coil (from afar), and can't seem to figure out it's size. Is the 6" top to bottom and the 8" dimension it's width? That would make each coil about 6" tall by 5" wide. Am I close?

Mine measures 8 1/4" long X 6 3/4" wide outside dimensions.

I got the new 10x5 SEF WSS coil two months ago . What a awesome coil

4x6 eclipse shooter coil is by far the best I have ever used for trashy areas and I sometimes hunt non trashy areas with it. I got 7 inches on a 1945 quarter with it!

Been reading opinions on the SEF8x6 coil, Spring is almost here, so ordering one for my MXT, and see if it's all that everyone says it is.

Received the SEF 8x6 a few days ago, was kind of pumped from all the good reviews I have read about it, couldn't wait to try it out, hit an old homestead I have hunted for years, pinpointing took a bit of getting use to, it's very light, catches on small twigs and such, but that's no problem, I did locate an old buckle. But any rusted thin pieces of iron, show up as a zinc 1 cent, vid of 74 to 75, have dug a lot of these, with the disappointment of them being a piece of rusted iron. Never had this happen with my 5.3 coil. Anyone else having the same scenario with the SEF 8x6 on their MXT?

Sounds similar to the D2. That's not what you were asking about but it seems to be a common problem with DD coils compared to smaller concentrics. I don't think anything will VDI as accurately as the 5.3 coil. You can gain depth and coverage but always at a loss of something else in a trade off. When using the D2, I dig a lot of rusted bottle caps that show up as a penny to quarter depending on how much is left of the bottle cap and depth. I have not used an SEF coil yet to offer a comparison.

I have both coils for my MXT Pro and keep the 6 X 8 SEF on most of the time. The 5.3 Eclipse does ID iron easier but it too is still fooled by bottle caps. The 6 X 8 SEF can easily ID iron, bottle caps and other ferrous targets by raising the coil and just pass the edge of the coil past the target location. I get the iron audio tone and see the VDI #'s go into the iron range before going into the high VDI range. Also the audio is harsher soundiing on bottle caps that read with a high VDI and the confidence bar is low. Another method is to just raise the coil up and sweep over the target, the VDI numbers will drop down significantly on a bottle cap but don't on a coin.

I have a 6X10DD now and I am going to get a SEF coil. Which do you think would be best the 8X6 or the 10X5? I am thinking of depth and separation.
