Coil Choice

Recently, I been hunting some old home sites. I keep the iron mask down to -16 in ferrous sounds -so I can hear everything. By moving the coil real real slow I've been able to find a few coins. I'm using the stock coil and thought if I purchased a smaller coil (5 inch or 8 inch), I might be able to pull some more coins out of these sites. Would I be better off with a smaller coil in these iron infested areas or is the stock coil fine? Thanks for you help

It's my coil of choice for trashy areas. It is light, smooth operating, stable and much easer to pinpoint with and you don't lose to much depth. After using the X-12 for awhile the 8" looks like a toy. I think the 5" is too small for most apps.

Aside from getting another coil, you may also want to try hunting with a lower sensitivity. It might sound weird, but coming down to 12-14 might net you a few more coins. I've done this a couple of times with some minor success.

is it a pain to change between the 10" & 8 " coils? how long does it usually take to do.

Peter,
This is the nicest thing about the Explorer if you have a X1 probe as it takes less than 15 seconds to change. Most will get a extra lower shaft and have the extra coil mounted on it and when you need to change I just flip my toggle switch to the probe, unscrew the cable from the switching box, release the cam lock and pull out the shaft and put the other on in and fasten the cam lock and conect the wire and put the toggle switch back to coil. I may not need to flip the toggle switch, but like some electronic components they need a load on them so i do it instead of shutting the detector down to change.
If you dont have the X 1 probe than it could be done in less than 2 minnutes as you will have to shut down the Explorer and wait for the restart.
That Sunray 8 inch is my favorite of the coils for the Explorer.

I shut the machine off first. I feel it gives the electronics a fresh start and a chance to reset to the new coil. not all coils are tuned the same and this gives the machine a chance to recognize the new coil and adjust to it's tuning. Probably isn't needed but it don't hurt! I even sometimes carry the 8" if I am starting off in a new area with the 12" and it's a ways back to the truck. Just stick the coil in the loop on the pouch and drop the cord in the pouch.
If you don't have the X-1 you are wasting way to much time in the field and losing too many targets.

What's the big difference between the Minelab 8" coil and the Sunray 8"????? Couple of ounces in weight??? Please advise. Thanks.....Jake

The 10.5 stock coil is a beast. Very heavy, but works well. SunRay manufactures an X-5(5 in.) and an X-8(8 in.) which both work well for me. If affordability is an issue, purchase the X-8 first and the X-5 later. They are available at http://www.netpath.net/~barbee2/. You will not be disappointed with this dealer. Tell him Nc_Digger sent you.
