Coil choice for the sovereign.

Jason in TN

New member
Thinking of a larger coil for the sovereign. 10x12 sef or 12.5 sun ray are the two I have in mind. Depth and weight are my main worries. Think the 12.5 would be lighter. Had a 12x15 sef on another detector and it was two heavy for me. What do you guys think.

Jason

the sunray S12 has about the same "feel" as the stock tornado coil. Its nice and light, great balance and good depth.
Myself I just ordered a WOT, heavier than the two you mentioned but covers more area and deeper.
I had the 12X15 on an explorer and it had to heavy of a "feel" to it. Thats why I passed on that one for the Sov. The SEF coils work great, have a tight center line of detection and get deep, but have a centered heavy feel to them. I sold off the 12X15 but I still have the 12X10 for my explorer.
If weight and balance are you main issues, get the S12.

I've posted time and time again about the Swingy Thingy .....It aids in holding your coil off the ground by holding the weight of your machine ....The only real effort is swinging the machine back and forth ....It makes a 12 x 15 feel lighter than the stock coil !!......Has anyone bothered to try it ? ......Jim

Thanks a lot that is helpful going to pic up one of those two. Beach hunting is about all I will be using it for. My shoulder has some problems so light will be better.

I have one did try it but did not like it. For me was uncomfortable and could not lay my detector down when I wanted to. Another cord to deal with and got in the way when retrieving targets.

I agree that it's another cord in the way , but after some fine tuning and adjusting , I had no problems laying my machine down, and for the minor inconvienience of the extra cord in the way, but the cord was out of the way when I swung my machine off to the side to dig the target that was right in front of me ....I'm assuming that your pointer is atteched to your machine like the SunRay Pointers ? ........ I could hunt twice to three times longer EASILY with no aches and pains later ...!!.... YMMV .....

I did and also did not like it. To each his own.

To each his own is right ...It's not for everyone .........It's either Swingy Thingy or a very restricted hunt for me ......So it's the lesser of two evils !!.... I've gotten to the point with it that I mostly don't even notice that it's there ....It DID take a while to get to that point though .....Jim

Thanks for the few who gave there thoughts on coils I will be getting one of the two. Looks like money wise for a new one the SEF may be cheaper.
Think the sun ray may be lighter though. Any way may come down to which ones the better price. If there are no real advantages one over the other.

Jason if you go with the SEF and get it new you will want to ask about the cable length to insure its long enough for hip/chestmounting. The cables seem to vary in length on them so just to make sure you dont get one that the cable is to short.

I 3rd the swingy thingy is just not right for me either. Too many straps, adjustments, cords......
I tried it with the E-trac at the beach and it wasn't worth the hassle.
Hipmount and get the lightest coil that will cover the most depth and still be swingable.
I guess this means the x-12.
Good Luck

Boy's and Girl's it is a good time of year to work out and get those arms looking like POP-EYES and hit your favorite hunting spots a running. Fill them scoops full of sand and swing them babies around. Now don't get all swole up and send no nasty replies. Got to go get me a bowl of ice cream. HH :detecting::minelab:
