Coil advice needed

I want to purchase an 8 inch coil for my Exp II and wonder what the coil of choice would be from those on the forum. I have a 5 inch but want something between that and the stock coil. Also, is the DD the best choice.
Most of my detecting is done on beachs in SWF with lots of trash, spring break central.
Thanks for the help, Chuck SWF

Chuck,
The Double-D coil is the only option you currently have unless you want to try an experimental coil . . . .
As far as the options between what you currently have, there are 8" coils from Minelab and Sun Ray. These will give you better coverage than your 5 inch coil yet still seperate goodies from trash whcih your stock coil might not be able to do.
The Minelab coil comes with the lower shaft
The Sun Ray coil does not
The Minelab coil is a bit less expensive
As far as which is best . . . . . personnal preference. When it comes to detectors, headphones, coils or even diggers the arguememts about which is better seems more vocal than the infamous "Which pickup truck is better . . Ford, Chevy or Dodge" arguement gets.
Search the posts on this forum and the Explorer Classroom to see what others recommend and you should be happy with your final selection.

Thanks Andy, your reply and information is much appreciated. I can't seem to find a dealer for the Minelab 8" to get details and pricing to compare with the Sunray 8", Chuck swf

Chuck,
GO to Minelab's website and click on the "NEAREST DEALER" option on the menu bar. Enter your zip code and see what your nearest dealer is. 99% of them will get the coil in for you to try with obligation if they do not already have them in stock. With the holiday specials, I would be surprised if they do not have one you can at least try at the shop.
Personnally I have 3 coils for my Explorer II - the 8" Minelab, the stock coil and the 15" Coiltek WOT. Each has its place . . . . . Others I hunt with use other coils (some have a box full) and we all seem to bring home the "keepers" at the end of the day.
Hope this helps.

Andy did not mention the Joey coil because while it is water resistant, it is not waterproof. Meaning you can slop it around in the surf, but it was not made to be submerged.
The Joey was designed to be extremely lite, 12 ounces, as such we did not use epoxy in it, as epoxy is the main ingredient used to waterproof coils, and it is also the main culprit in adding weight to the coil.
Take care!

Doc,
Sorry for the oversight . . . . . . actually tried one at the get-together last week in Las Vegas and was quite impressed with the performance and discussed it in two of my seminars . . . . . .
If you are not doing any shallow water hunting and wat a bit more coverage than the 5 inch coil, add the elliptical Joey from Coiltek to the list of the other two coils I mentioned (Minelab and Sun Ray 8 inch round coils).

Thanks for the info Doc, I do need one that is water proof. I did just order a WOT and two swingy things from you. Chuck swf

Andy,
The 15" WOT you mentioned. Would you give an opinion on this. Spoke to a person who is with Minelab and he said the coile is not tuned for Exp. I have been considering one now for a short while.
HH
Ray.

I'm not sure why they said the WOT is not tuned for the Explorer but...if you search back through Minelab magazine ads you might find a picture of a BIG pile of silver coins that I found with the Explorer and the WOT coil. <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">

we have the WOT coil.
However we are the design stage of a small DD all terrain coil. Right now we are prototype testing one for the SD GP.
If all goes well we may expand it to the Explorer.
BCOT!
