coil 4x6 or 6x10

hello I'm new to the forum and in France, can you help me in choosing the coil?
use would be for places heavily dirty (ancient ruin, with various waste more recent
the soil contains a lot of iron ore)
all in a mountainous environment

here is the description for the field research for this is to find small objects such as old small piece (1/2 ") bronze or silver medal ......
thank you for your answer

There is no real answer to your question. Both coils are DD coils and both are elliptical shaped. The only difference is the size. The 6x10 has more coverage and should have a greater depth. The 4x6 should have better separation but less depth. With out being at your site, I don't see how anyone could say which to use.

Get the 4x6. Mine rivals the 6x10 in depth. The 6x10 is only trustworthy here where I live to about 6" then it loses it. My 4x6 has beat that. Hope this helps. martin

I didn't pick one or the other coil because France isn't, Illinois or Texas. Some people swear by each coil. I personally don't use the 4x6 but that's not because it is a good coil. I've had all the Whites coils but because of my hunting style I only have the D2 and 6x10 now. Location and personal preference is the story for coils.

I finally decide to opt for the 4x6 as the probe ground gives the following values:
vdi : -75
phase: -175

Since they are both DD coils your probe readings should not have been important in your choice of coils.

My soil is usually in the 90's, -93 to -90.

Rob I am currently hunting a park with lots of trash and tons of iron bits. I cant seem to get a read on the vdi of the soil. Any suggestions? I have been using the 950 believe it or not in salt beach. It seems to quiet things down a bit. I did use the D2 there once but it seemed to be very noisy. My 5X3 eclipse isn't V rated. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you mean in ground probe?

The trashier the smaller the the coil. Also lower you Recovery delay. I have been using the 950 believe it or not in salt beach. It seems to quiet things down a bit. This is normal and many guys do this to quiet things down. You normally will lose some depth. Many times in salt beach you can then turn up the gain to get back some of what you lost. I did use the D2 there once but it seemed to be very noisy. ( Are you talking EMI or just too many hits?) My 5X3 eclipse isn't V rated. Any help would be appreciated.

If you are getting jumpy VDI this would be expected with a large coil with multiple targets under the coil. if your recovery delay is too long you will miss targets because the machine isn't done processing before the second target gets under the coil. At some sites unless you get the junk off the top you will never see the good targets that are masked under them.

So small coil, shorter recovery delay, try 5 band filter so you can really slow down, and reduce gain to reduce the coil footprint.

Yes I get so many signals that getting an accurate ground probe or a decent ground balance is next to impossible. As far as EMI it might be... this place is a 100 yards from a major expressway but nicely hidden away. A short walk to what once was a very big port active as far back as mid to late 1700's I have dug some incredible stuff there and Im sure there is a ton in the ground. I don't think guys hit it cause they must get discouraged. I am starting to get silver out of this place finally...Wheats? I get at least 5 or 6 early wheats every trip if Im lucky I pull a mercury dime. Where are the quarters? I have pulled a few large coppers 2 with no faces as smooth and rotted as could be and a British North Borneo one cent piece dating 1890 in bad shape but at least it was identifiable.
I have played with the filters and came to the conclusion that 10 band was the best. What is a reasonable recovery delay I'm thinking 35?
Thanks for any more help or suggestions.

The RECOVERY DELAY is for the disc mode only. RD=40-45 emulates DFX target processing. 35 - 40 emulates the MXT.

35 sounds good. Back then a quarter was big money.

We are forcasted to have heavy rains tomorow after the rain I'll hit it I always seem to do better there after the rain. Better conductivity? Thanks Rob

I've had the 4x6, 6x10, and the 5.3 on the Vx3. I actually prefer the 5.3... Great depth and shoots through the trash pretty well. I think this is one of those questions where everyone has a different answer, and they are probably right due to their ground and style of hunting. Best of luck with your 4x6 shooter!
