hello all, after many years spent detecting every chance i got, the stuff has accumulated. a recent rebuild of my den told me exactly how far i had taken this great hobby over the years. looking over the huge mess of artifacts and whatz - its i had boxed up, i realized the extent of my illness and needed to come up with a better plan. and quick.

coffeecans! theyr'e stackable and they hold a lot! and don't take up much space! actually, i been using them for a while now. cigar boxes just didn't cut it. the tops fold in! arggghhh. at one time i had so many plastic bags of stuff i'd found it began to look like an evidence room! oh no, not for me. i couldn't store the stuff on the kitchen sink, either [tried that] made the wife irritable. so, everytime i come in from the field, i toss everything not identifiable or needs more cleaning or research to figure out what it is and save it for those cold winter days when i can't be out swinging the machine.

i built some shelves out of some old 2X6's i had laying around, even painted 'em up, bought some riker cases, and put the very few valuables i've found in a safe. and the stack of coffeecans will always be there in the corner! with very few - and i mean very few - exceptions, nobody's gonna get rich in this hobby. like most people, i want to show what i've found, and see and appreciate it.

so, despite all these nice new shelves, a dozen mounted riker cases, everything layed out all neat, and perhaps a new found approach to displaying my finds, all nice and new, organized for a change, there remains the stack of coffeecans in the corner. hmmmm. no gettin' around 'em. whatzit forum, here i come! thanks, and hh,

Ya, I use cat litter pails. They are tough and stackable and hold more junk than other boxes I've used. Got the shelves, and riker mounts are cheap and look great. Yes you can find some valuables (I've got a couple GW's) but for the most part, It's all about braggin' rights. Great exercise, good air and some solitude. That's why I do it. Winter is coming and I hope I can get myself to fill those cases.

Oh Ghost , I cannot tell ya how many times a week I hear , what ya gonna do with that or ,
get that filthy rusted crap out of my sink  I gotta wash it somewhere, LOL . I use cookie
tins my shelves are filled with full cookie tins of whatz itz . Did order some riker mount cases
for the better finds , now just to find more wall space . Great post , after so many years what
does everybody do with their finds ?

I have only been at it a year. Even still I am now on my second fill of a big plactic jug. I just got a bigger plastic jug and moved my whatisits to that. I guess I will soon be looking for ways to show/stow mine, Beale.

Nowadays, Im saving all my trash in a bucket in the bed of my truck. Every so often I go through and separate out the various garbage. Eventually, it goes into my metal recycle bins.

The good stuff goes into my treasure box - a real chest, with a lock and everything! Once at the end of the yea,r I review and sort this stuff. The clad coins get cashed in and the other goodies go back in the box.

The interesting "doo-dads" go into another bin. Once a year I pull it out and reminisce over the many places I've swung a coil.SOmetimes I'm reminded to go back to this or that place, or maybe to call an old friend I haven't talked to in a while. Like you I reckon these things are part of my life's tapestry, threads through years weaving a pattern.

On rare occasions, I actually toss something from the Whatziz Bin in the trash, but not often.
