Cody I have a question

Will I see any loss in signal from having an extra connection in the wire between the coil and the unit? It would be a soldered male and female 5 pin connection.

I have the sunray probe and don't like how the Sunray installation routes the coil cable on the outside. I like the clean non-snaggig feature of the explorer. I typically hike through the woods to old remote battlefeilds and the brambles and branches make the walk difficult with the wires exposed.

I planned to make the following modification if you don't think the splice will cause problems:

1. Reroute the coil cable back through the lower rod.
2. Cut the cable just above the top of the lower rod and solder on a new 5 pin female plug.
3. Slide a rubber grommet up the cut off coil wire up to the existing (original) 5 pin female.
4. Drill a quarter inch whole 1.5 inches below the Sunray switch.
5. "Cork screw" the bare end of the cut off coil wire through the whole drilled in the uppper arm until the grommet is reached. The bare end of the cable will reach to the end of the lower rod.
6.Pop the grommet in the 1/4 drilled whole and connect the existing female to the Sunray switch.
7. Solder on an new male plug on the bare end sticking out the bottom of the upper arm.
8. Connect the new male and female plugs.
9. Reinsert the lower rod in the upper rod.

I realize I may need to cut off the excess wire from any new coils I purchase and solder on a new female do elimnate excess wire in the shafts but I don't view that as a problem. The mod will allow me to prevent cable snags on my hikes in and well also allow me to fully collapse the unit again when hiking. With the sunray and the cable taped to the outside I can't do this.

Will this hamper performance?

Solder joints and connectors can decrease current flow depending on the connector and quality of the solder. My assumption is you will have good electrical and mechanical solder joints and parts. I personally would not hesitate to do that to my Explorer and do make those kinds of modifications. I shortened the cables on my Sovereign and also thought of routing the cable from the coil inside the shaft since I also have an X-1 probe.

We have been pondering this X-1 mod for a while. I am getting one soon. Send us your pics Digger, and good luck!
