cobra beach magnet coil

New member
can anyone tell what needs to be done to replace the 10in coil on the cobra beach magnet?
The detector belongs to my friend's son and the coil is damaged, and needs to be replaced
I would like to try replacing the coil myself and not sure how to remove it from the detector, I have already loosened the nut on the bottom where the wire goes in and this is where I've stopped. any further steps would be great

I think you are at the wrong end of the cable. The replacement coil would have a cable attached to it. Just disconnect the cable at the control box. Rob

yes that's where I have it unscrewed, and I have the control knobs off, the nuts off and I'm not able to get the end off the control box apart. is the something else I'm missing to do

Hi Wayne,

Inside the battery compartment underneath the protective foam pieces are four tiny screws, Remove the foam pieces and remove the four screws then the front face panel should slide out.

You don't need to remove the control knobs or pot nuts, Just remove the four screws in the battery compartment. Also, As you slide out the front control panel make sure both the headset and coil connectors are loose so the front panel can easily slide out as you keep working in the cables to give the panel excess cable to slide out.

I have an extra Beach Cobra coil if you need one, Hope all works out well for you.

Keep us posted,
Paul (ca)

Thanks so much, it came out very easily, now the delicate part is the wiring, any input with this?

and how much for your cobra ?

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for answering my PM and considering my offer.

First, Please do not remove the coil wires from the circuit board until you receive the replacement coil. When the coil arrives you will need to remove four coil wires and then resolder the same colored wires back to the circuit board.

Plus, Please try to use a de-soldering iron to remove excess solder so you have a clean area to work replenishing the area with fresh solder with the replacement coil wires.

The colors of the wires should be

One Green,
One Red,
One Black,
One Blue with a coating of black heat-shrink tubing over the blue wire, This blue wire may appear to be another black wire but look closely near the coil cable and you'll see the blue wire.

Think about my offer ($20 bucks shipped) for the replacement coil. Or, If you'd rather have me complete the repair send me the entire housing with coil minus the lower and upper shaft and I'll compete the repair for you (No charge for labor) you just pay shipping back. ($25.00 should be enough) going with this route, $20.00 for the coil and $5.00 to ship it back so $25.00 would cover everything.

Hi Dan,

Might as well share the blessing as others have done the same for me :)

Plus, We may someday do a trade or two with all the parts and old vintage detectors we have :compass: and such

Thanks Dan :)

Hi Wayne,

I hard wired the coil today same day the detector arrived, It'll go out tomorrow first thing in the morning.

And thanks for making it easy supplying postage to ship it back and for buying my coil, You should have it before the weekend.

Thanks again, Paul (Ca)
