Coal at vdi 85

dirt lizard

Member
I recently went to a park i've been getting good results at and sometimes i get a deep signal at 85 only to dig six to eight inches to find a piece of coal that sets my G2 off along with my pro pointer. At vdi 85 thats usually a silver coin. Has anyone else encountered this ? Is coal a hotrock? i live in new england where the soil is mild.

i dug a couple in the park today wasnt using the gold bug so dont know the numbers but gussing its coke and not the sort you drink or stick up your nose :yikes:

I hit these black pieces of coal about 5 times all hit over 80 vdi at different depths. My knees were getting sore but i was also getting old coins from the same area.

Yes the burnt coal will produce a positive signal. And you can see on the VDI what it is. But better to dig and see then to bypass.

Another lesson learned about the g2. I will add this to my notebook thanks all

Yeah my mxt liked coal also.Alot of my other machines did the same thing with coal. The small coil may not respond as much 2 coal as I have not found any with my gold bug pro.

Found coal aplenty on a salt water beach, VDI 76 to 85, 3 to 8 inches down, GB Pro 5" coil. After digging the 18th or 20th piece of coal, and with more similar signals, I moved on.

Coal has low electrical conductivity. What you're finding is likely charcoal or coke (the fuel kind, not the snortin' kind). Coke/charcoal tends to give a broad dull response when sweeping across it, in contrast to the crisp response of a coin or ring. If you go by the "feel" of the target response as you sweep over it rather than just the target ID, you won't have to dig much coke/charcoal.

Thanks Dave, you're absolutely right about the dull response of charcoal vs the crisp zip of a coin or ring. Just got back from another beach, made myself a test bed at the waterline with coal/coins/nuggets and a ring to train me ears and I think I got it down pat now. *happy grin*!
