Close ups for Alabama Jim

Nick

New member
Here are some close ups of the coins and buttons you wanted to see. That poor 1808 had crud on the back. Look up the 1784 New York half penny in the Red Book. I was told by a dealer that all known examples are counterfeit and stamped unevenly to look as if they had normal wear. I need a better camera for close up shots, I can't seem to get a good shot of the coins. Good luck to you! Nick

I threw in a photo of some of the junk I found in that field. My wife found that big heavy thing. My cousin did find an old musket ball out there as well. It's at the point in that field were I can go almost an hour with total silence.Time for the big coil or even an Eagle Eye? Anyone use that?

Just wondering if that big heavy thing was a cannon ball? Looks like it has a curvature to it.

That was my guess but I'm not up on military projectiles. I know some people reading these messages are. I can only imagine what happened over the years at this site! Thanks for looking. Nick

Nick the second button from the left on the top row looks like a british captains button circa 1774 -1787 according to Albert's book page 90.It would take a professinal to know for sure. The coins look great though hard to tell from your picture. You would need to send them to a service that authenticates old coins. The 1794 looks to be in very good condition and could be worth a bunch.Maybe someone on this site could tall you where to send them.Never trust a coin dealer unless you are truly confident in them.

Thanks for your interest and information Jim. When I first started hunting my favorite field, I could hardly get a signal for some reason. The only thing I got was that big pinwheel looking button in the photo. Good sign though. As time went by buttons and more buttons started coming up. It seemed to never end. I noticed a small trail in the woods just off the main hunting field that had a lot of modern activity. I was finding pulltabs, new coins, ect. When I tell you I swung my coil one foot off the modern trail I'm not kidding. I got a strong quarter signal at 4 inches with my GTA-1000. That is my favorite signal to date.(The 1808 made the same signal in that field.)It was as if I crossed a border between the past and the present. I dug down and up flipped the 1794. I did not know a lot about coins at the time but enough to be VERY happy at that moment. Because I didn't know much, I brought the coin to a dealer. He said,"well it doesn't have much collector value because it doesn't shine a nice brown color, it's green. I'll give you $100 for it." I just said that it's not for sale and left.I went back a year later for fun and asked if they had any 1794 large cents. He said "we haven't had any in stock but I'm sure I can find one someplace for you". Another dealer said he'd give me $200 and yet another guy pulled out $400 to buy it. I love just looking at it once in a while and showing it to other collectors. Why would I want to sell it right? I know another guy who found one at the site of an old saloon in NJ. Mine is one of the most common varieties but who cares?

Hi Nick and I feel you are doing the right thing to keep it. I don't have any desire to get rid of anything I find unless of course it was something of fantastic value then I would sell to help pay bills haha! Ok nice to meet you Nick and I wish you much more success in detecting. God Bless ya.

Thanks a lot John. I see you have a store. Do you have a web site for it? I wouldn't mind checking it out. Thanks again. Nick

Hello again Nick, yes I do and the website is www.johnsdetectors.com. It is not anything great. The webmaster fellow is not an honest person and I can't get him to do anything and now he is threatening me because he says I haven't paid him. So I have a person that is honest and she knows what to do, so it will be better soon. Thank you for your interest Nick and feel free to email or call or get me on the forum and I will try my best to help you out. I'll chat with you later Nick and by the way I am a part time operation right now until things get going. I'm not a Kellyco but I do want to be a big help to people and a blessing too. God Bless ya Nick!
