"cliff ring"

Well-known member
I call it a "cliff ring" because one quarter of a step for me and that is where I would of ended up - at the bottom! I was scanning a little foot path at the edge of a cliff in a heavily wooded section of a local park. At the bottom of the 20 foot cliff: a bunch of boulders and a brook were waiting to greet me. All that I know: I certainly did not want to make the acquaintance with either one of them! First, I found the merc right in the middle of the path. On the way back (I was so tired from the muggy / humid weather, I decided to just hold my coil just a few inches over (where the cliff started its downward turn) and walk. 20 seconds into detecting this lazy way I suddenly came across this faint #84 high tone that squeaked out through my headphones. I scanned back over the target and sure enough it was a very "smooth" signal. (using pro mode) Very carefully I stepped towards the ledge and dug in. I am glad the soil was super soft! I then scanned with my Garrett (well borrowed ) pin pointer and located my target lying approx 5" deep. The results - one beautiful Sterling silver ring! All the years I hunted this park, I never walked down this little foot path. (I guess I am becoming brave lol) This is the same park and not all that far away from where I found my (2)Three Cent Pieces. With this lightweight detector, I am hunting more wooded areas of my parks and is working well for me. Moral of this story: 1) don't fall off the cliff and 2) scan every area of your parks including the wooded areas. Even heavily wooded places you think you wouldn't find a penny. For me, scanning the woods of my local parks has netted me some super nice finds! Thanks for looking - Jim

That is a beautiful ring and a very nice looking Mercury Dime.

Wow! Great hunting and finds! I like that 'walk along' method with the coil not being swung...its a good way to cover those tight trails and also right at the waters edge.

Thank guys for your comments. For many, many hunting years I always followed the "masses." For instance the park where I made these finds has an old picnic grove and has been hunted to death by everyone and there brother. I still find a wheat cent here and there but for the most part this area is a done deal. However all these years one tenth of a mile in the woods from the picnic grove, I have "opened" up a new area. So far I found several silver dimes, a sterling ring and two 3 cent pieces. Just never know....

Yeah, you got onto something Jim...those 'off to the side' hunting areas that are not obvious to most everybody..great year and string of finds! Wonder whats next for you?
Mud.

Hey Mud,

I hope it starts with a C and ends in E! preferably a container of silver or gold coins

Jimmy you know I like woods hunting , but it never gets that good for me , I bet people used to sit up on the edge of that cliff with their girl friends and enjoy the scienic view of the valley, probably not an Isolated event probably more up their bring a rope and tie on to a tree and scirt the edge, got to be more , AT pro ROCKS

I freakin love mercury dimes. And that ring is gorgeous!

Great story and great finds Jim! I too usually like to walk and detect without swinging after a session is done. It pays to remember the shape of the field under the coil that you get with the DD coil - it's wedge-shaped. You'll cover more area when walking by holding it sideways.
HH!

Good call. Did have about a 20 foot slide on a loca lisland one year...was doing a deer path...gave way...saved the detector ruined the pants. Good scoof!

Thanks togamac!

This is exactly why I turned the coil and scanned the edge in the manner I did. Not to mention that I was plain tired of swinging lol. Think of it as last ditch effort to find something before going home....and it worked!

When you're tired, this comes in handy. When I use the GTI-2500 with the 12 inch coil which I haven't used it lately, I just walk down the base lines or side lines without swinging it and the stock coil on the At/Pro. I have a 5 X 10 DD coil for the 2500 and it's lighter than the 12 inch coil but has no imaging. Then if I get a good hit, I scan back and forth with the coil and pinpoint my find. Saves time and effort if you wear out easily.

Very nice finds and write up. I do that swingless scan on the way back to the van after a hard day's hunt, too. I agree about getting off the beaten path sometimes, too. I've found nice silver pocket spills and some pretty nice jewelry that way. Sometimes, to break my unconscious hunting patterns, I force myself to try what I think would be the most unlikely spots. Sometimes I get a nice treat (and sometimes I just get cactus needles in my rear end.
