im looking to go to clearwater fl for a little r and r , how are the finds on the beach there, is there much competition , how about camping close to the beach . thanks for the help

Clearwater is hit heavily every day. I was there for two straight weeks hunting every day this last winter and yeah, John is right. The beach and the water has lots of people with detectors on and in it every day. Make sure you bring lots of money for parking. The main beach parking area is full by 10 am on most days so you have to get there early. The last time I checked, all day parking cost $10.

Best to find the lesser known lesser used beaches. The pawn shops have become the competition for us metal detectorists. So don't expect too much gold or silver to be found. But I would not give up. It will just be harder to find.

Just a few years back, when gold was less costly, I was finding gold rings at the rate of three or four a week. My best week was four years ago when I found 7 gold rings. This last winter, I spent two and a half months on the beaches and found.......no gold and just a few silver rings. I am a people watcher and noticed that people were not wearing gold as in the past. Even their gold wedding rings were not being worn. Maybe they got smart seeing all the metal detectorists on the beach and in the water and figured why lose it in the water or in the sand when they can pawn it for some real cash.

thanks for the help , i need to get out of iowa for a bit , and looking to spend the winter some place with no snow , heading south in a few weeks on the bike

I got back from Clearwater Beach yesterday. I pounded the water for the day and found 1 quarter. I wet sanded about 10' from the waterline to the beach and found zip! Parking is $1.50/hour and 2.00 on weekends/ hr. I I also detected the small tot park in front of the beach and found 65 cents.

I would suggest you go to Siesta Key Beach, Sarasota. I was there hunting 3 days and found a titanium ring, silver ring and a bit of junk jewelry. The beach is beautiful rated #1 in the country and the parking is free. The sand is like poured sugar that white. Get there early around 7 and you will have no problem getting parking. When I go back I will go to Siesta Key Beach only. Drops and finds are not plentiful yet and the beaches also are pounded by detectorists, but at least there was some drops. Most people go to this Beach. I hunted Lido Key Beach and found basically zip also. I dug all targets. Good luck and find some gold !!
